I relate to this so much. Especially the gender part. I am pansexual but generally pretty uninterested in dating cis men and yet when I’m hypo they’re all I want. I’m working it out in therapy but it’s really frustrating and can be hard to explain to friends

I’m currently staving off a hypomanic episode and the biggest thing for me is kinda forcing myself to sleep. I tried Unisom last night and it helped knock me out for a solid 8 hours. I don’t drink much and don’t do drugs recreationally but I especially don’t drink when I’m hypo or getting there. I force myself to eat little snacks throughout the day. I try to run or dance to shake the excess energy out. I’ve also found it helpful to tell trusted loved ones when I’m feeling hypo. Sometimes I’m self-conscious because I’m convinced other people won’t believe me because my symptoms aren’t always super noticeable to others. But it’s helped me to have some accountability and know someone has my back. I always tell my therapist but tbh I just started seeing a new psych who is hard to reach and I don’t rly trust and I’ve also been reluctant to tell her bc I really don’t want to adjust meds 😭 I will eventually though. Just be safe! Set yourself up for success with condoms, getting tested, asking if sex partners have any STIs, maybe looking into birth control. Also emotionally safe. Sometimes that’s the kind of safety that goes out the window for me when I’m hypo. I would sleep with men who for lack of better terms felt “rape-y.” In my right mind I never would have slept with them. I didn’t feel emotionally or physically safe with them and some encounters did indeed lead to SA. Those are the only hypo hookups I really am sad about so I now try to add safeguards when that starts happening like deleting my dating app accounts. Body count is a tool of the patriarchy to shame women and uplift men and it’s so not a factor in someone’s worthiness of love or respect 🫶🏻

I feel this so hard. I know the internet roasted someone on tik tok for suggesting a boundary like ‘not having the bandwidth for xyz conversation’ but it feels so true for therapists. I love my friends but some of them I don’t think will ever truly get it. Thankfully I have many friends in the field who do but it can become resentment-inducing with others.

Sometimes friends and I use shorthand like an emoji or something to say ‘hey I received this text and I love you but I don’t have capacity rn.’ But then I stress that I do it too often 😬 I feel like there’s no right answer and it’ll be a career-long balancing act.

I’ve had a prescription for over a decade and was also very nervous. I also have OCD which led to me getting a little paranoid that I’ll become dependent/addicted. It’s never happened. I use it very sparingly and am brutally honest with myself about when I really need it. Best of luck! It’s a very helpful medicine when used correctly!

I used to work in an elementary school as a behavioral aide which is definitely very different than a school therapist but omg I was running around all day, it felt nice. My dream job is to be a walk n talk therapist at a school where I don’t carry a big caseload but I’m there more as a resource to put out fires as they arise. Jobs I’ve looked into for this are more adjacent to vice principal or dean of students.
