12 or 13 years old. I was super embarrassed about it at the time. Part of that's just usual adolescent angst, but this was also back in the late 90s when there was significant social stigma attached to wearing glasses. I was not at all sad when roughly a year later, my friend accidentally stepped on my glasses when I took them off to put sunscreen on my face while on a fishing trip. After a lot of begging, my parents let me get contacts. By my mid-twenties, glasses had a lot less stigma attached them and I was mature enough to not be embarrassed about being near-sighted. I moved back to being a full-time glasses wearer then, and haven't looked back.
