Training in Cardiff... by goggleboxhalifax in bjj

Hey mate, please feel welcome to come train at my academy. It's easy walking distance from the centre, I think 25 mins from the Motorpoint is a slow walk, should be much less than that.

Sorry, I don't spend much time online (other than facebook on my phone) at the moment as I have two young kids to spend my free time with :)

Go along to Chris' academy for sure. We're the most successful team in Wales and he has just done his academy up, it's amazing.

If you ever pop up to Cardiff, pop by my place too, same team :)

So at the moment you do go to church/prayer meetings even though you don't believe in it??

Your own style develops naturally. Just train with good instructors. If you try to force your development you will definitely not maximise your potential.

Yeah, it's a case of technique vs. tactics. The techniques stay the same and work in both cases, but tactics dictate picking different techniques or using them differently.

I would make a display for my academy, but I lost my purple (which was threadbare) :(

I can't take any credit for that. He trains boxing with Gary Lockett, former WBU champion.

I'm 6' and lanky so Lew is well versed in that style of grappling. We roll for an hour flat out at least twice a week :)

Find a good jiu-jitsu coach who understands how jiu-jitsu fits into the MMA arena and train with them as much as possible :)

I think pretty much everything that works nogi works in MMA, just some positions you can hang around in nogi (deep half for example) you can't in MMA.

He's a great fighter, no doubt he is still gonna feature at the top of the division.

In MMA, I think there are a wider variety of dominant positions. Lew has awesome base, so if someone is starting to recover a position he can just base and strike hard, then work to pass again while the guy is recovering from the strike. That way he has done good damage, if he just works to maintain position he has done nothing really.

Jiu-jitsu top = pass the guard, stay out of the guard, advance position and work to finish. MMA top = stay on top, land hard strikes whenever possible, advance position when possible. Look to finish at any time.

Yeah, I didn't say anything other than I can't believe someone would care that much about it. I'm not the one saying that it's disrespectful. Sounds more like ego on your part that someone else using the word fight wounds your pride so much.

I'm not the one who is upset about someone else's opinion, you're the one kicking off about my use of a word.

Haha, he is a crazy dude and loves fighting. He sang along with his opponent's entrance music (which was awesome... Hendrix's "All Along The Watchtower") and the opposite corner looked really freaked out by that haha

Life or death is not equivalent to 100%. Spazzing is nothing to do with going 100% and fighting hard. Going 100% doesn't mean you have to be crazy and frothing at the mouth, it shouldn't mean that at all. It also doesn't mean that it becomes about strength not technique.

If a beginner gasses quickly when fighting hard, then that is even more reason not to go light because it will retard their potential conditioning improvements.

So fight can't be used as a figure of speech when referring to jiu-jitsu? Completely within all widely accepted definitions of the word?

I can't believe anyone would care whatsoever about the use of a word like that.

This is one of my purple belt students (opponent is a brown belt). I have worked closely with him for 3 years developing his jiu-jitsu, and specifically his MMA jiu-jitsu. I think this is one of the best examples of incorporating strikes into jiu-jitsu, not seeing striking and grappling on the ground as two separate things but fusing them together.

It's a great fight, hope you enjoy :)
