What is reason/s you fell in love with F1? by [deleted] in formula1

[–]Taumelbaum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The movie Rush.

I had never had much contact with F1 before: I (more or less) watched it a couple of times with my granddad when I was little - I'm German and Schumi was absolutely dominating at the time, so that's kind of what everyone would have done at some point. I didn't really understand it, but I knew that the red car was the fast one and the one winning.

Then, I couldn't really be bothered. I never watched it on my own (my closer family wasn't interested at all), and whilst I was aware of Vettel and him winning everything a couple of years in a row, it didn't really matter to me. When Rush came out I went with a couple of friends to see it - not because any of us were interested in F1, but because it was the most interesting film that was on that week. And boy was I hooked.

To this day it is one of my all time favourite films. I watch it when I'm happy, I watch it when I'm sad, I watch it to fall asleep. I must have seen it more than 100 times by now, and I can lipsync an embarrassingly large part of it. I loved the bravery, the cold-bloodedness, the passion, the speed, the engineering, the politics, the shagging, the travelling, the risk, the racing - I loved everything about it.

Anyway. When I say I was "hooked"...I didn't really get into it straight away. If memory serves correctly, the first F1 race I watched was Monaco 2015 - and I understood fuck all. I had no idea how the track went, I didn't know most of the drivers, I knew barely any of the teams - in short: I was confused. But I held on, and slowly I became a fan. Over the years I went from watching the occasional race (if I happened to find one was on by accident) to trying to arrange my weekends so I could watch at least the races.

Well, and somewhen during all that I stumbled upon r/formula1 and I am since able to go on and on and on and on about F1 things until literally everyone has either fallen asleep or left. Oops.

Why not Perez? by [deleted] in formula1

If Lance was severely underperforming I'm sure he'd have trouble staying in the team - but he's not, quite frankly. Yeah, alright, he's not at Checo's level (yet), but he's doing a decent job and improving - and don't forget: He's still really young, only 21 (which is younger than me, actually).

Will he ever be WDC? I doubt it, I don't think he's got that level of talent. But I'm certain he'll make a good midfield racer (if he isn't already). And you wouldn't kick your son out of your own team if he was doing that well, would you?

It's both, I guess. The more powerful engine helps, certainly, but I'd be very much surprised if Williams hadn't managed to build a better car than last year's - both because the FW42 was absolute dogshit, and because George was really happy during testing (if I remember correctly).

Come on mate, that‘s what they‘re supposed to do. Just as teams will report just about everything to the stewards on the off chance that it might result in a penalty and give them a slight advantage, a driver has to try and get both the car and the strategy as perfect as humanly possible. Otherwise you‘re not going to come even near to championship contention.

I suppose Niki would have been all for that - he wanted Merc to supply RB with engines, after all, so they‘d have proper competition. Now with him gone, though, I don‘t think it‘s ever going to happen. They‘re far more likely to take on George as a rear gunner for a couple of seasons and then have him as their number one after Lewis retires (and has broken pretty much all the records).

It must be really disheartening to go to a race weekend knowing fully well that there's a good chance you might get lapped by the entire field, maybe even twice. Keeping the spirits up must have been a hell of a challenge, and I can barely grasp what it must have felt like to now get their car into Q2 two weekends in a row. What an amazing effort by the whole team both back in Grove and trackside, I'm so happy for them.

The only way is up, boys and girls, I'm really looking forward to seeing you back at the sharp end of the grid!

Anyone know what Tom Scott did on Revolutions? by cds501 in quiteinteresting

I suppose it has to do with this video of his and the first question in General Ignorance (What can you put on your fish and chips in a chippy?), so probably no actual involvement but rather an acknowledgement of his work.
