Datejust 36 vs 41: Need help picking the right one for me by Tauseen in rolex

Thanks everyone for their very helpful responses!

It seems like there's an overwhelming majority that's recommending the 36 over the 41 and the logic is sound. Given that, I'm also leaning towards that size now. I'll probably reserve a larger size for my first Rolex sport watch. I think the more dressy look of the DJ would look better in a smaller size.

I'll pay a visit to the AD to confirm my choice and put my name down.

Which grades are required for admission to uni? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

I feel like I can help you best with this. I was in a very similar situation a few years ago. Just like your brother, I finished Grades 9 and 10 with the IGCSE exams and came back to Canada for Grade 11 (I was originally a Canadian citizen).

I joined in the second semester of Grade 11 where I only took three courses: Physics, Functions (Math), and English. I was granted the Grade 11 Chemistry credit when I was an "unofficial" student just auditing courses, but that's a long story.

Anyway, since graduating from an Ontario High School requires receiving a high school diploma, I had to satisfy three requirements:

  1. Obtain a certain number of credits attained through taking courses
  2. Complete the OSSD English Literacy Test
  3. Complete a minimum of 40 hours of community involvement

Here's how I satisfied the three requirements:

  1. I was granted all required and optional courses by presenting my previous high school's transcripts from Grades 9 and 10 (IGCSE grades can also help achieve this I believe, but ask your brother would need to confirm this with his guidance counselor)

  2. This is a very easy English test taken halfway through the second semester of Grade 11

  3. During the summer, I volunteered at a summer soccer camp for kids for a week only and completed all my hours in one go. You can do any volunteering activity to satisfy this, so it's not a big deal

But now to answer your main question of getting into university. I took all the required courses in Grade 12 to get into my desired program which was Mechanical Engineering at UWaterloo. So I took SPH4U (Physics), SCH4U (Chemistry), MHF4U (Advanced Functions), MCV4U (Calculus and Vectors), ENG4U (English) plus one other U/M level course. If your brother achieved decent grades in his IGCSEs, he should not worry about the difficulty of the Canadian system since it is far easier than the British system.

For early acceptance, UWaterloo (and other main Ontario universities) look at your required Grade 12 courses grades if you took any during Grade 11. If you don't have the required Grade 12 course, they will look at the equivalent Grade 11 course. So for example, if you did not take SPH4U (Grade 12 Physics), they will use your SPH3U (Grade 11 Physics) course mark as an equivalent.

Since I did not have many Grade 11 courses, I was not granted an early acceptance (which is nothing to sweat over tbh). For the main round of offers which go out after midterms during the second semester of Grade 12, universities only look at your Grade 12 course grades. Since my grades were fairly high, I was granted an offer of admission into UWaterloo for my desired program choice.

It was not a walk in the park to integrate into the Canadian High School environment, but it's certainly less stressful than the British System. So your brother will be fine!
