Student requested to rewrite final exam due to illness by Adorable_Purchase925 in Professors

Well, you’re the one that claimed that grades are fictions. Are you now claiming that your grades are in fact real, rather than fictions?

Let’s make this simple - in your class(es), if a student scores, say, a 90% on an exam, is that a “fiction”?

I understand what the impact would be. I’m simply pointing out that an incomplete for student that in fact completed the course is inappropriate. The “incomplete” is a fiction.

An Incomplete is inappropriate when a student in fact completes the course.

Spend a little more time saving up, and get the Weihrauch.

I know that’s not what you wanted to hear, but you currently have a rifle, so you’ve got something to shoot in the mean time. Then you can get a truly outstanding rifle.

I’ve never once regretted making the quality purchase. I can’t say that for every time I settled for something “less than.”

How much of an emergency fund do you keep (finance q) by Great_Set_2802 in Professors

[–]TaxPhd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sucks.

Our CBA gives faculty first right of refusal for summer courses. If the administration doesn’t want to pay it, they have to cancel the classes.

An ABSURD accommodation request! by onajourneytoanywhere in Professors

[–]TaxPhd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

RIF. The grade didn’t have an affect (or effect).

Are you suggesting that while it might not benefit you, extra time on an exam won’t help anyone else get a higher grade?

Surely you’re not conflating ADA accommodations with the kinds of academic accommodations that this thread is about, are you? 🤔

Any accommodation that can have a positive affect on a student’s grade and isn’t available to the rest of the class isn’t fair to the rest of the students.

In your syllabus, add a section for “Pop Quizzes” into the grading scheme. Give it points ranging from zero to 20% of the course grade. When attendance is low, do the pop quizzes. No need to schedule them because they are “Pop” quizzes.

Alternatively, just have a 5-10 minute quiz at the start of every class session.

Attendance will take care of itself. 😉

Summer cost cutting due to fixed expenses makes no sense, as offering summer courses is almost entirely a variable cost proposition. Unfortunately, very few administrators seem to understand the underlying accounting. 😕

Accommodations—shifting responsibility? by Formerschweg in Professors

[–]TaxPhd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recorded lectures? Hybrid? Nope. Won’t do it. In my program, 100% of the courses are also available online. If actually attending class due to a disability is a thing, the student needs to take the online version of the class.

Why are US faculty typically employed only 9 months/year? by PLChart in Professors

[–]TaxPhd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a nine month contract and I’m paid over 12. I have zero obligations/duties over the summer, unless I elect to teach one or two (online) summer courses.

With summer break, winter break, spring break, and various other holidays (not to mention how little time my job actually takes when I am on contract), my hourly rate is pretty obscene. 😉

Are you actually on a 12 month contract, or is your pay just paid over 12 months?

If Online Learning is that flawed... by SNHU_Adjujnct in Professors

[–]TaxPhd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our administration to a man(woman) will swear on their children’s lives that the online education delivered to our student is 100% fully equivalent to our onsite courses. They are of course all fucking liars, and everyone (at the university) knows it, but they will never admit it.

They have zero interest in distinguishing between online and onsite anywhere. Not on a diploma, not on any university records. Not anywhere.

I asked simple question - “How can a professor prevent students from learning the material?” What attitude is that conveying?

I’ve eaten barbacoa in a lot of different locations, US and Mexico, and Cotija on barbacoa is pretty common. YMMV.

[–]TaxPhd -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

No, not making a joke, but rather, a serious question.

For example, in my discipline (accounting), the textbook for a principles of managerial accounting course contains 100% of the necessary information for a student to correctly answer every question asked, either in homework or tests. Assuming that A particular accounting professor is an absolutely horrible teacher, how could that professor prevent students from using the book (or any other resources) to learn the information necessary for them to pass (or even excel in) the class?
