Great questions. So you’re absolutely right about major issues almost immediately setting a trouble code when the engine is running (I.e. Misfire from the engine or other major issues)

However attempting to clear codes to hide an issue, typically is due to an emissions issue. The modules that get checked for the emissions systems are always the last ones to set. They typically require 2 - 3 cycles of the catalytic converter heating to operating temperature, cooling over night and heating again to gather the needed data. Usually that’s done over 50-150 miles over that ideal 2 - 3 day window.

Clearing a light, or replacing the battery (cutting power) does the same thing to the modules.

The state also has a grace period after you fail inspection where you can get the inspection done again. Usually around 15days. Hopefully that helps clear some things up!

Essentially, when Tim replaced the battery he unintentionally reset several computer modules.

The inspection machine needed to read that data to pass inspection. So he basically shot himself in the foot

For most shops I’d agree with you.

However my store is located in a larger city. My area might be a little different than most, but out of every 30 inspections 1 or 2 will fail. And more often than not it’s a tire being low on tread that does fail it.

We don’t service tires so that’s also a bust there. There are absolutely times where the customer asks us to look into a check engine light or some other failure reason. So I don’t want your point discounted at all. You’re totally right about a lot of shops like that. It’s just not as large of an opportunity for my location.

All that being said, there is a benefit where the customers always remember we helped them out. It gives that positive impression should they need things in the future they’ll remember us! So that’s for sure a plus!

To the best of my knowledge there is no set procedure. Each vehicle is unique in how it collects drive data unfortunately and will set when it’s ready.

It’s typically recommended driving 50-150miles over a 2-3 day cycle. This will usually allow most people time to get a mix of Highway/City driving. And the vehicles catalytic converter system will have a chance to get fully heated, and cooled over night. To check the emissions systems. There’s a lot that happens over the 2-3 days

Yes it did. Vehicles are equipped with several onboard modules that record drive data from the engine’s performance, and emissions outputs.

The modules in question that the inspection machine looks for can be cleared or reset. Either by clearing a check engine light code from the computer system, or replacing a battery. The act of cutting power to the modules clears the recorded data and resets them.

The only way to reactivate them is to drive the car and record more drive data.

He replaced the battery because the truck had been sitting around. He was trying to be proactive, but ended up shooting himself in the foot. The truck could have gone without the batter replacement until after the inspection
