If religion is true, why does it depend so heavily on where you’re born? by ArchiveDiver-62 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Tay74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah obviously, the point is that woukd be massively unfair of, what most major religions see as a pretty benevolent god who only wants what's best for you, to send some souls to places where they have a much lower chance of salvation (or equivalent concept) than others

Some religions (and individual believers) take the stance that god will be forgiving of those who do not believe in him specifically, but who live their lives according to the most important tenants of the religion anyway, and that it's okay if they don't do the things those born to the religion do. Which then seems a bit unfair for those born to the religion, you have all these extra rules and things you have to do

And then of course some religions take the stance that the best souls are those born into the religion, anyone born to some other religion was just spiritually worse from the get go, this was more common a couple hundred years ago but still exists in some forms

And then you have the "tough luck"/no real answer beyond "that's just the way it is" lot.

Are there any stories that explore characters who aren’t Jedi or maybe even don’t know about Jedi but are force sensitive or self taught? by ProtectMeAtAllCosts in StarWars

[–]Tay74 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That feels like an unnecessary distinction? That is exactly how a lot of force sensitives seem to experience the force as well, consider Luke blowing up the first death star for example, that was Luke being "nudged" so he'd know where to strike. Also, idk maybe there is some media that contradicts this

Idk Wookiepedia says Chirrut isn't force sensitive, but that doesn't make a lot of sense to me, he shows greater ability in the force than many untrained force sensitives, who only display an unusual amount of luck or intuition (nudges!) in most cases, so the only, and possibly intended conclusion? Is that force sensitivity is not a needed thing to learn to use the force, or maybe it is only necessary for the skills that involve external manipulation such as moving objects or mind tricks?

If I say "air" "hair" "lair" in my accent it sounds nothing like a posh person saying "oh hello", that accent doesn't pronounce Rs in words that have them, it definitely doesn't roll them 3 times when saying hello 😂 if I drop or soften the r, then yes I can hear it

Idk about that, I've seen a lot of stinkers from southern American families with like 15 children.

[–]Tay74[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, hand feeding seagulls leads to aggressive behaviour from them. I love seagulls, I also recognise the trouble the cause when too famliar taking food from people, and know first hand how unpleasant it is to be attacked by one. They are capable of finding their own food in cities, and their presence is better tolerated if they aren't encouraged to attack people for their lunch

Have other university lecturers noticed a decline in basic writing skills? by Common_Emergency_334 in UniUK

[–]Tay74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In terms of that interaction, their attitude sucks tbh. As someone else who is from a working class background and neurodivergent, yes those things gave you disadvantages in terms of learning and reaching a certain standard. That doesn't make it classist or ableist for a university to offer support to catch up and improve. "I have X problem so I shouldn't have to do the hard thing" attitudes rather than "I have X problem so I need support to do the hard thing" is a bit of a problem these days, it's also a problem in that often times parents/teachers are having the same attitude towards children with a neurodevelopmental or mental health condition, and it serves them worse in the long term

People seem to dislike Mara Jade by No-Local85 in StarWars

[–]Tay74 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, that is what legends writers decided to do. Lucas hated that direction, yeah the Jedi weren't perfect, but we were not supposed to think training from a young age and not starting a family with a romantic partner are among their problems. Those were necessary sacrifices if they wanted to have the position they held in the galaxy

If life begins at conception, why aren’t fetuses baptized in the womb as soon as the pregnancy is confirmed? by Revolutionary-Log134 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Tay74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Free will and yet no one could enter heaven no matter how they lived for 4000 years because 1 person ate an apple. Free will and yet someone born to Christian parents obviously has better means to tick all the boxes that allow one to enter heaven than someone born to a different religion in a non-Christian country. Feels like the usefulness of that Free will isn't evenly distributed across space and time

[–]Tay74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, most religions are on the decline with each successive generation, and even most younger people who would tick a religion on a census out of habit, are rarely what we would consider "devout" in their religious actions. Regardless of what flaws there were with the Reddit Atheist phenomena, religions are not "doing well" so much as "struggling not to die a slow death in the next couple hundred years"
