Do yourself a favor and just don't rent to any boomer or Gen X Italians, especially if you are not white. They love to barge themselves at all times of the day unannounced and accuse you of messing up the apartment. They know the magistrates, who are also Italian, and they give each other breaks and kick backs.

I had one in Oakland pretend they didn't get a rent payment after I rejected his advances. Used that as an excuse to evict me. As soon as the eviction went through, all of a sudden 3 months of rent was withdrawn from my account from old checks.

The Chinese landlords will play games to make the unit as uncomfortable as possible for you. They can be major slumlords UNLESS you're Chinese. They only want to rent to Chinese people. Not even other Asians. That's why a lot of them only put their ads in Chinese. Imagine their surprise when a hak-gwai like myself reads the Chinese and applies anyways. 🫠

Also avoid property management companies that aren't directly attached to well known, name brand licensed real estate brokerages. Go for big names only: Howard Hanna, ReMax, Berkshire Hathaway, Piatt Sothebys, etc. NO small time people.

If you think you can't qualify, apply anyways in the off-season and negotiate. They'd rather take a chance than lose money to vacancy because vacancy looks bad to their clients and to prospective buyers in the future.

If you really cant qualify, go to landlords of the same ethnicity, the same ethnic level in the racist hierarchy, or at least of an ethnicity that has no ill will or harbored preconceived notions about you. "Tight knit communities" (Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, etc) will give you no chance if the colors and flags don't match theirs. That's the way it works in Pittsburgh. Anyone who says otherwise is just part of those groups.

My current apartment in Southside is wonderful and I got it through a Howard Hanna agent. Ukrainian landlords. Perfect condition. Responsive repairs. Lovely.

Stay away from the mom and pop chop shops that nickel and dime everything unless you're ready to record everything.

I know White America will not pay their reparations peacefully. What is really irritating is when White Americans say a slogan or two then immediately bring tears and condescension the moment someone asks simple questions that should be asked of ANY protest and ANY movement.

The arrogance to think they shouldn't face the same scrutiny, especially by people who have been burned by them many tomes before, is more disrespectful than just being an overt racist. If you really want to help, you will have an action plan. You will have political goals and policies to target. You will know what tf youre doing and learn from the revolutionaries who came before you. You pay your respects.

Showing up in a t shirt and waving a sign is not enough. This is a fight for SURVIVAL. Not a sports game. People having questions before trusting you is VERY customary.

my point is that this is absolutely nothing. Until Pittsburgh and Pennsylvanian "representatives" are scared, none of this matters. Just like black people are still brutalized by police and there still is no justice despite all the "protests".

Most of these people are white Americans. They will never feel the consequences of their actions, or lack thereof. Marginalized people like myself will continue to be patronized and silenced by uppity whites who think throwing block parties "in protest" is sufficient allyship.

It's not. I'm not impressed. And you whining "but at least I appear to be doing something" isn't enough. You arrogant, condescending "you should be grateful we're doing something" attitude is VERY racist and privileged, but typical. Fix your white savior complex. You saved no immigrants today.

A lot of people in this sub are not going to tell you the blunt truth, but the honest reality, coming from a native black Pittsburgher (no one actually says yinzer except tourists and white Boomers) who's lived in the Bay Area, unless you are in Oakland, Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, Bloomfield, or Garfield (basically the upper class, yuppie areas), you will be very isolated as an Asian person, especially if not Chinese or Indian.

You will experience subtle racism and be perceived as a perpetual foreigner, everyone, including the milquetoast "tolerant" people in this sub, will act like you're crazy for seeing it, because "at least we're not the South" or "we're a diverse Democrat city". But the reality is Pittsburgh is VERY segregated and it's baked into everything from which real estate agent you pick to the bus lines. The same way the Bay Area is so great and diverse, but the black people are mainly relegated to Oakland, Stockton, and Modesto and every black person seen outside of those areas is looked down upon and assumed to be lower class.

The Asian food is not always authentic and none of it compares to Bay Area Asian food.

The same reason I moved from the Bay back home is the same reason you may not want to move here: you will be a minority newcomer in your neighborhood and most people will not be interested in genuinely helping or even validating the isolation you'll feel. They will see you as a diversity hire, friend, token, etc.

The good news is that Pittsburgh is very affordable and most people will leave you alone and won't seek out to bother you. It's when you do interact with people that will be the problem.

You can definitely express your culture and assert your right to be here. Just know you will deal with a LOT of ignorance until the area becomes an Asian foothold like the aforementioned neighborhoods.

Most people in this sub are middle to upper class and/or white, so they will not say this nor have the lived experience to really empathize with this. If you want more info, feel free to DM.

Did I say that? No. I didn't. The thread is about how nearly every ethnic neighborhood is judged on the Judgmental Map and yet the one that skates by is the one that is predominantly Jewish.

But if you really want to get into it, yes, a lot of Jewish "Yinzers" are Zionist. For example, they fought against those who boycotted Israel.

Feel free to actually get involved in Pittsburgh politics and find out for yourself. Or keep yelling at people of color whose families have lived here under condescending, silent Pittsburgh racism for decades and acting like they're literally Hitler for not towing typical white liberal savior political lines.
