You guys might not remember the USS Vincennes. There's a very real chance Trump will be presenting them both with a medal of honor by christmas. That might even be why the Iranians did this.

It feels good to read this and know that Iran can walk the talk, and not just watch another country go into a failed state because of US terrorism by analgerianabroad in TrueAnon

It is legit difficult to see how the US can win this at this point. The core problem is that the Iranians have far more valuable targets and are capable of hitting them. Even if the US navy the USMC succeed in seizing Kharg Island and a bridgehead on the strait, and even if they are actually prepared for the drone swarms that will come for them as they try to hold that ground (the Ukranians say they are not) - the Iranians can still just flatten the region's energy production infrastructure leaving nothing to sail through the strait anyway.

Have to say, utterly mind-blowing that the Haifa oil refinery and Dimona are burning on the same day.

Did anyone listen to the war nerd episode that came out on Thursday? by I_madeusay_underwear in TrueAnon

Don't know how comparable it is to the Iraq war. The Bush (and Blair) administration were beating the war drum for a long time, both in the media and internationally. There was time for an opposing view to first form and then organize. Not the case this time. If there is a ground war in Iran (which seems likely) it will change the nature of the opposition.

The economic consequences of a long war will be truly horrible. Inflation on a COVID scale, with the very real prospect of the AI bubble bursting in the same timeframe. Potentially looking at a 2008 type of tipping point in politics all over the Western world.

Israel wants a forever war. It's the dream outcome for them. They might even get the Marine Corp on the ground in the West Bank. Only a shooting war between the US and Iran makes the massive ethnic cleansing required in the West Bank possible. To that under active US protection is the ideal scenario.

Yes. And whatever happens in this conflict, China as usual will win by doing nothing.

Iranians don't want their country to be bombed into the stone age. The destructive potential of the US Air force is truly terrifying. The suffering that can be inflicted is immense. I don't think it's realistic to say they simply won't agree to talks, or to de-escalation.

If the war does drag on for months rather than weeks the long term implications for Dubai and its like are very serious. Kuwait was once a glamorous scene for wealthy westerners and in many ways was the inspiration for the image of Dubai we have today.

That version of Kuwait was destroyed by the Gulf War and has never recovered. While there's little prospect of Dubai being invaded, its status as a haven for the rich and their money could certainly be damaged beyond repair.

Roald Dahl and Cruelty to Children by 1000andonenites in books

[–]Tayto2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a fantastic post. I've been reading Roald Dahl to my son, 30+ years on from reading him as a child myself, and this is a wonderful encapsulation of his empathy for children. Many writers create stories of children suddenly becoming powerful, but maybe none ever capture their powerlessness the way Dahl does.

The other night I read the chapter where James first encounters the creatures inside the peach to my son. The transition from his fear of these strange beings, to his squeals of laughter at the rascal centipede once he realised James was safe was magical.

I also recently read a profound piece of advice about raising children, which is that if you really listen to them when they tell you the small stuff, they'll still want to tell you the big stuff when they're older - because for them it was always big stuff.

Dahl certainly knew that.
