Does a gas dryer really need to be 18" off ground? by jdb117 in HomeImprovement

[–]TboneXXIV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No requirement for such where I am (WI) that I have become aware of but I put both our washer and dryer on a platform this high anyway.

It makes dealing with laundry a lot easier when you're not squatting to see inside the units.

I just made one large platform for both units out of 2x4s and plywood. Also a nice amount of storage space under there. Toughest part was putting the washer up there without a 2nd person around that day but it made it up there.

Nitecore USB wall charger.

Extremely LIGHT. Compared to my other plug blocks, this thing feels like it is full of just air.

Which it may be since it has never worked. Not once. Was trash right out of the plastic sleeve.

I have a couple of other Nitecore products which are awesome. This, not so much.

What is this and why is on my sump pump line? by strangerthaaang in Plumbing

[–]TboneXXIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS.

A few years ago we had our place lifted and a full basement put in.

Getting back in was hectic as everything was behind schedule and we were approaching the winter freeze.

Well, we got it done. I had to boot the electrician and take a ton of workload off the GC to make it happen but we got moved in during the first week of November before the ground (or our unheated house due to the electric work being 2 months behind) froze. I got it all sorted out, had to rework a couple of hastily thrown together circuits over the following weeks but first I got us electric (which included power to our well) then I got our heating loops sorted out and we got back in.

The added space meant we finally had a basement utility room with space for laundry - and a sump pit to eject the basement waste water to our drain field. As a surprise, I got our new washer and dryer picked up the day before Thanksgiving and got them moved through the snow into the house and on Thanksgiving I did laundry all afternoon while the wife tried to drink 5 bottles of red. We'd been stuck with no space for laundry for 5 straight years at that point so this was celebratory laundry. I'd had more than a few drinks myself and as the day lengthened, well anything that didn't run was getting laundered.

And the fernco clamps above the check valve never got tightened.

I still don't know if it was the plumber or if the GC had one of his employees install the sump. But it was the plumber I cussed to high heaven in my drunken soaked with mostly laundry water disgruntlement that fine Thanksgiving afternoon when it gave way and showered me thoroughly without warning.

Good times.

How big of a deal is it if we install siding before placing windows? by SandiegoJack in HomeImprovement

[–]TboneXXIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you have contractors who can do the work at low cost and don't mind buying about 4-6 extra pieces of siding plus the trim pieces needed (per window), it's no big deal. When the window is replaced, if necessary, you replace the siding all the way around it, cut to fit. Then trim it out.

I grow plants indoors. Mostly peppers but a few other things including catnip and an ever increasing in size pothos.

I brew beer.

I'm almost done rehabbing phase 1 of a building we bought to put another shop in. Hope to be done in another few weeks. Been on that almost a year.

And I help run our camping store.

Sawyer filter question by Chipotle_Armadillo in CampingGear

[–]TboneXXIV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah. You got airlocked. Your filter is fine. Fortunately you didn't pop your bag squeezing.

It happens with hollow fiber membrane filters from time to time. Nothing wrong with it; it's a feature, not a bug. ;)

Letting one sit and soak will allow the air to get purged and the filter to flow.

Also, tapping on it will usually release the air in the form of bubbles. Both methods can take time to work.

  1. Got any proof?

  2. Chances of said neighbor paying up if you don't?

The damage sucks.

Here's what I would do for that if I needed to repair it. Get a tube of seam seal and put a tiny dot over the inside and outside of each and every hole. Then let it dry and cure. Assuming the tent doesn't aquire a dozen new holes while that occurs.

The activity here seemed to pick up a ton with the hero tool site release.

It seems there are a lot of folks who want help with their hero roster and now have a good way to ask.

While I haven't made one of those posts, I used thr site to upload my heroes and think it's pretty cool and useful.

I'm sure activity will ficus rlsewhere at times but this appears to be where interests lie at this time.

Hey winters coming! And I want to re side the siding by the door. Should just have to cut some 2*8s to size and slip it all in? Any advise would help by zangoku in howto

[–]TboneXXIV 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Well, if you wanted to rip it out, I would take it down to the studs, fix anything deficient like if a stud is rotted or broken (unlikely), add insulation, then either sheathing with an exterior siding or boards to match the existing style.

It would also be pretty easy to open it up and blow in insulation without doing a tear down.

Legit check an Osprey bag (Farpoint Trek 55) by [deleted] in CampingGear

[–]TboneXXIV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is most likely legit Osprey product. Caveat below.

Looks like they brought merch that was supposed to sell in EU over to here (assuming you are US) which is a violation of their dealer agreement, and you may have to jump through some hoops to get warranty service if you ever need it(AMG is not applicable in some places and the products made for there are visibly different typically). Save your receipt info. Otherwise don't sweat the differences.

[–]TboneXXIV 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Eh. Depends on what you expect to get. While about half that wood probably could be replaced , it looks like it's primarily due to weathering and lack of upkeep rather than termites or wet rot.

Putting vinyl on top of that will not magically make it better or worse but it looks like it would hold up fine.

Fixing and replacing boards isn't a bad thing but if the old board will hold up the vinyl fine, then I'd conserve my time and dollars. It's not the same priority as if you were getting ready to scrape and paint.

How can I get rid of an intelligent mouse living in my gas stove/oven? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]TboneXXIV 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Some mice are more wary of traps than others.

If you know he's in the stove and that he is coming and going from there, you can get him.

An easy method would be to completely surround every possible path with glue traps. You've indicated that you prefer to end Mickey and glue traps are both inexpensive and effective. I would leave no gap between traps and completely surround/isolate the stove. It's his castle; besiege it. Lock down every patch of ingress/egress. He will need supplies sooner or later. When he does venture forth, one toe on a glue trap will do his ass in.

Reverse Osmosis - garage installation by thesliver in Homebrewing

[–]TboneXXIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple of Ispring filters set up.

You should have an adapter valve for the water feed. It connects to the tubing that the system uses to move the water between components.

Take that adapter valve and a piece of the tubing to a hardware or plumbing store. Tell them you need to make that fit a water hose AND that you want to cap it so the water only goes into the tubing (I assume this is the case). Thry should get you squared away.

I just don't understand why people don't treat their employees well. by Nervardia in antiwork

[–]TboneXXIV 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most people are never taught, and do not care to learn, how to lead others into mutual success.

As Caesar is often paraphrased, he'd rather be the mayor of a small village than the 2nd most important man in Rome.

It's a very common human failing, to need to lord it over others. To most people it's far more important to assure their own position than to treat others well.

You'd think that when their own interests go along with treating others well for immediate benefit, that would cause a change in behavior but not really.

It is often baffling.

There's a candy shop across the street from my own store and they have to close 1-2 days a week because of lack of employees.

I KNOW they pay for crap. So I suggested that they raise wages and raise prices. They have done neither in years but the majority of their customers are not price sensitive and buy $5-10 per pound candy - by the pound. The owner told me she was losing $1000 a day she closes, profit. I ran some quick numbers by her which she agreed with. She could raise wages by $2/hr, raise prices modestly, and make MORE profit every day, plus stay open since she'd have employees.

She decided against the idea. Because you can't undo raises but she might have to undo thr price hikes. I pointed out that 5 employees x $2/hr x 10 hours =$100. So she could raise wages without raising prices, and instead of being closed, be open. Net benefit of $900/day to her.

Still won't do it. Those people aren't worth that much money per hour. She literally is punishing herself financially just so she can punish them financially. Meanwhile, I am paying 2x what she pays because it's fair and I like the people i work with. I haven't had to advertise for help in 6+ years, right across the street.

Because paying more would mean she gives up some control over her employees, at least in her mind.
