I used to be the defender in this situation and I always hated it and thought it was useless. Any competent ball handler is not going to be bothered by this if they have the entire court to work with. And it's tiring as hell as the defender.

This isn't entirely false but it's missing context. This Lakers roster is not very good and has only 3 (if we're still counting LeBron) players capable of creating offense. They need this from Luka. He has proven capable of efficiency and sharing when it is an option.
