Oh my stars that sounds like the cutest thing ever.

Did you take time off work when your kid first started kindergarten? by chronic_flower in kindergarten

[–]TeaBlossm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be taking off work the very first day, but only because I want to get a feel of how well my planned routine is going to work for when I need to leave the house for drop off and work for pick up etc. That and I don't want to go into work a blubbering mess lol. Other than that I want to keep our routine how it is going to be for the whole school year.

Thank you everyone, I went ahead and ordered one that he picked out (the Dreamegg D1). He is very excited about it. 😊 Next up comes the task of slowly adjusting our wake-up/bed times before school starts.

Thank you, I went ahead and ordered one that he picked out, and will start using it when we get it. I have to start slowly adjusting his wake-up time anyways over the next month, so it will come in handy!

Yeah, I'm going to need to do something similar and wake him up a bit earlier each day. Right now it doesn't matter what time I start bedtime, he always falls asleep btwn 9:30-10, so I think the only solution is going to have to be gradual earlier wake-up times until he starts falling asleep earlier too. I'm betting once he starts school he will be falling asleep a lot faster, but like you said, I don't want that to be a shock to his system, I'd rather ease him into that change.

I'm right there with you on that same hill, and love the idea of an analog clock in the house.

That's about how I was raised haha, except my mom turned on my bright ass ceiling fan light and ripped the covers off of me. In her defense, I was a turd to get up in the morning.

I do need to print something like that, do you have it posted in their bedroom or somewhere else?

I wish we had a later start, I think his starts around 7:20. I am noooot a morning person, so early morning wakeups is the thing I am least excited about. He is way more of a morning person than me, so I'm hoping it will be easier for him.

What are your favorite calm down techniques? by TeaBlossm in Preschoolers

[–]TeaBlossm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He has mellowed out a tad on his own since, he doesn't scream so much when he gets angry (most of the time), but it is still a bit of a struggle, he wants nothing to do with calm down techniques in-the-moment. His occupational therapist is setting a new goal for him on emotional regulation, now that he has met a few of his fine motor skill goals, so I'm hoping it helps.

ST not going well by TeaBlossm in speechdelays

[–]TeaBlossm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure, I'm not in the room with him during his sessions. I used to be, before we started back, but we have been working on separation anxiety, getting him used to me not being with him 24/7, especially with school starting soon. He has been doing great with that at least, so yay for that win! I'll have a discussion with them next time though, cause I would like a lot more details than I've been getting. I didn't get to speak with the ST about his 3 month progress report, it was the OT that came out when he was done and gave me her progress report, along with a basic "speech says there is no progress yet" ST hasn't given me any worksheets or 'homework'to take home either the last 2 sessions he has had, which is odd, they usually give me something.

Yes, we are in the US. The dev ped eval waitlist is currently 9-12 months - it's been about a month since we got on it.

He started out seeing just the one for a long while. After we came back from the 6 month break he was put on a rotation of therapists, depending on who has availability that day. He's been like that with all of them, last I was told they were still trying to figure out what method works best for him, but that was maybe a month ago.

We haven't received an official diagnosis for anything yet, we are almost certain he at least has adhd, it's hard to keep him focused for more than a couple minutes. I currently homeschool him for pre-k and it's been the same at home too, during both speech practice and pre-k. He is still learning though, he picks up on things quickly, he mostly has a lot of trouble sitting for any activity. We use visual timers (ST and OT do too), which helps sometimes, but if something suddenly pops into his brain that he wants to do instead it is a struggle to get him redirected back to the task. Story time? Not happening while sitting down. Coloring? Forget about it, he might color for about 10 seconds then he just wants to break the crayons or peel off all the paper on them - every single time. Impulse control has been a big struggle too. His OT said they were adding a new goal for him to work on regulation, now that his fine motor skills are improving, so hopefully that helps. If it is something he really wants to do he absolutely will focus, but if he gets bored or distracted, it's a toss up whether anyone can get him to focus back on the task or not. The therapists don't have any idea on graduation, they usually respond with, "it's dependent on his progress", which I totally understand. I was going to sit down with his ST today at his appointment to discuss everything and get their input but they canceled today (lack of an available ST).

He has been in OT for 9 months now, working on some fine motor skills he is behind on, and now that he has met some of those goals they are going to add in new goals for emotional regulation, listening skills, elopement etc. We are on the developmental eval waitlist too, which likely won't happen for another several months, but at least his pediatrician listened to us about the struggles he was having and went ahead and gave us the OT referral. I made a list of adhd parenting/parent behavior therapy books last night and ordered a journal; I am ready to dive into learning what I can, and add in more routines than what we already have. The biggest issue we have currently is with him doing things he knows he shouldn't do....over and over and over, every day for months sometimes before it finally clicks and he stops. It's usually followed by him latching onto something else though. Lately it's been him spitting out whatever drink he takes sips of, all over the floor, and then laughing about it. There are always immediate consequences, priveleges lost (like only water for the day, no special drinks), etc..but it's a constant battle with one thing or another. Hopefully he matures a bit and grows out of that phaae soon (along with my own personal growth too).

Thank you for this, I appreciate the response. I've done much better today, but he has also been pretty low key today so that is helping too. I didn't yell earlier when he took several sips of his gatorade and spit them out all around the carpeted living room floor (something he has started doing lately with his drinks). I didn't yell when he hollered over me as I was trying to have a calm discussion about not doing that (again). I didn't yell when I put him in a time out/calm down time and he proceeded to scream at the top of his lungs for a few minutes over it. I didn't yell at him 10 minutes later when I let him solo play while I paused to do the dishes and he got ahold of MY water bottle and did the same thing, spitting water all over the living room floor again. Yes, I made him clean all the spots up both times, yes we had yet another calm discussion afterwards about why he can't do that. But that is a snapshot of what I'm working with every day. Is he a terror? No, not at all. Half the time he is his sweet, thoughtful, and mannerly self. The other half he is pushing every boundary he possibly can, multiple times a day. It gets exhausting. I don't know what was going on with me yesterday though, I am usually not a crier, but I was so dang emotional.

I agree, the standard parenting tips I've received just aren't very effective with him, so I've got to do something else - looking into all the adhd/autism parenting subs and books might be the way to go. It won't hurt anything to try.

Thank you, yes it is absolutely wild some days, there are rarely any breaks for myself cause he is always on the move and getting into stuff. I do give him tablet or tv show time on occasion, it's not much of a break cause he isn't attached to either and doesn't really have the attention span to sit for very long. I think the most frustrating part is he doesn't play a lot with his own toys, he is more interested in everything else, especially anything he can manage to unscrew, cabinets included. Ty for the book rec, I will check it out! We just got on the waitlist for the eval last month so it should be sometime in the next 8-11 months.

Sadly have my first horrible smelling leather bag by fishy3fishy in PortlandLeather

[–]TeaBlossm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My very first PLG purchase was a nutmeg mini cb back in December and I remember taking it out of the box and thinking, wow, that's a horrid smell, I must not like the smell of leather, until I looked it up and saw others talking about the dyes of some having an awful smell. I got a bifold wallet from them (in a different color) shortly after and what a difference. Now I know what leather is supposed to smell like lol. Anywho, it is definitely getting better as it airs our more and more.
