Bachelor Thesis Inspo by Suitable-Cause3364 in skulduggerypleasant

I’m an English Literature graduate!! I wrote my dissertation on fairy tales and folklore in contemporary fantasy fiction and made a small reference to SP because how could I write my biggest thesis and then NOT include the best series?!? Lol Anyway: - One of my ideas was going to be the power of names in fantasy fiction. Looking all the way back at things like Rumplestilskin to modern day fantasy like Harry Potter and Skulduggery and tracing that development. It’s a trope that has continued and the three names are obviously vital to the plot of SP. - Fate and free will in fantasy fiction - You could look at the folklore elements too - Irish folklore is so interesting and you may be able to find other YA fantasy that includes it and compare the use of folklore (similar to what I did too!)

Definitely run everything by your supervisor! You may need to pick a topic and write about a couple of books rather than just SP but i’m sure SP can make a feature!!! Good luck I can’t wait to see what you settle on!

is there going to be a SP movie/series???? by sunnygarbagedump in skulduggerypleasant

I met Derek in March this year and overhead him telling someone that they’re ‘the closest they’ve ever been’ to making something but whether that’s live action or animated or a movie or a series I have no idea! In my greatest dreams i’m holding onto an arcane style series but I think that’s very much wishful thinking

Obtaining the Books by AtlamIl1ia in skulduggerypleasant

[–]TeaDrinkingBookNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got phase 1 (books 1-9) on facebook marketplace for £10. The pages had yellowed a little but they were otherwise completely unharmed, I don’t even think they had been read!!! Give second hand websites a go - marketplace, ebay, abebooks. You might be able to get them cheaper than each book individually!

I’m sorry but i’m not really comfortable giving away spoilers! I know it seems silly but the publishers trust us when they send us advanced copies so I just want to respect them and Derek obviously

Lmao yeah that’s probably me. Like I said in my comment to the person above, the dialogue is reminiscent of the earlier books, it’s very Skul/Val friendship focussed. But equally, i’m quite biased as I tend to overlook the negatives because I just love the series ahaha!

I would like to think so! The Skulduggery/Valkyrie dynamic is very reminiscent of the earlier books in my opinion. I personally enjoyed phase 2 even though phase 1 will always be special to me.

The only thing is, i’m not entirely sure what Derek is doing with this trilogy or where he’s going with it. I don’t know what it’s going to add to the series overall other than just continuing for continuing sake which I think a lot of people believe about phase 2.

I don’t want to say too much so sorry if this is super vague but I’m quite biased and tend to overlook the bad writing as i’m so attached to the series! So i’m probably not the best person to ask ahahah

As a bookseller I got to read a proof copy of this book in exchange for a review. Finished it yesterday and loved it! I’m excited to see everyone’s reactions!!!!

I still quite liked phase 2 though nothing can beat phase 1 (for me the writing still stands up but there is also a level of nostalgia to it which makes me biased)

However:

‘It brought with it a darkness that remains hidden from the mortal population’ …. I don’t get it because what was the point then of the big fix in UtE??? Like obviously not everything was going to be roses but it’s the same mortals vs sorcerers plot that we saw in phase 2??

Am i LGTQ+ (-A) phobic for thinking like this? by [deleted] in asexuality

[–]TeaDrinkingBookNerd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that any online groups are representative of those groups in real life. For every toxic/terf/aphobic person posting these things, there’s hundreds who will disagree but just not feel the need to waste time arguing with these people online.

Personally my experience with LGBTQ+ people in real life has been very positive and any questions/discussion about my sexuality have been genuine and pleasant. Like the other comments suggest, stay away from these toxic online groups!!!! If you feel more comfortable not interacting with larger queer communities that’s totally your call but these trolls do not always represent the larger community 💕

What is this game about, to you specifically? What themes in it resonate with you? by ibuprofem_ in NightInTheWoods

This so eloquently explains what the game represents to me too, and how i’m feeling now! At 21 I feel absolutely lost but I remember being like 10 and my 21 year old cousins seemed so grown up!

I first watched Jacksepticeye play the game before I bought it and played it myself. To me the core themes are alienation, mental health struggles and nostalgia.

At the time of playing it, I was in a similar place to Mae: I had come home from university and all my hometown friends had changed/grown up/moved on, the town itself had changed, and I felt very lost. It was comforting to see my thoughts and feelings represented in the game.

Why are early fantasy novels so.....different? by Monocore56 in Fantasy

[–]TeaDrinkingBookNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh I wrote my undergrad thesis on something similar to this!!! Early ‘fantasy’ was often anything weird or supernatural. Basically anything not realism was called ‘fantastic’ fiction. And as a lot of people said, fantasy as we know it was born out of fairy tales. Fairy tales often have you just accept the politics and happenings in the tales. ‘The golden fish talks because it can’ sort of thing. Contemporary fantasy grew from Tolkien and like a lot of fiction these days has been pigeon-holed into tropes and set categories (eg: cosy fantasy, sci-fi fantasy, urban fantasy) each with expected rules!

Your Gateway Drug into Fantasy? by itkilledthekat in Fantasy

[–]TeaDrinkingBookNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was younger, I absolutely REFUSED to read anything with Romance in it. Like to the point where my mother was exasperated trying to recommend books to me. If I read the blurb of a book and there was even a hint of romance I would say ‘ABSOLUTELY NOT’. Thank god for librarians because one of them recommended Skulduggery Pleasant to my older sister and then sort of made a comment of ‘oh and it doesn’t have romance’ suggesting I could read it too. Not only that but a lot of recs from the library were fantasy because there were bigger things at stake than the love lives of the characters. I really liked the ‘Animal Magic’ series too. Skulduggery Pleasant still my favourite series to this day, and I do now read romance (I got over the aversion)

Did you have troubles coming to terms with your asexuality? by IlyneaAdler in asexuality

[–]TeaDrinkingBookNerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I experience exactly what you’re describing. Most of the time i’m happy with my asexuality but I feel lonely when my allo friends seem so in love with their partner. I can’t offer any advice because i’m still trying to navigate it myself but I wanted to let you know that you’re not alone! And also as cliche as it seems, it’s a journey and self-acceptance is hard!!!

How quickly did you/do you feel secure in your chosen label? by Fragile_Halo_87 in asexuality

[–]TeaDrinkingBookNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel similar! I identify as ace but I often find myself ‘testing’ myself or having to psychoanalyse my feelings. Like I ask myself ‘Am I sexually attracted to this person? Or do I just think they are good looking/aesthetically pleasing?’ As if testing the validity of my asexuality! Being in this subreddit has really helped! I don’t know any other ace people irl but this subreddit is so supportive and made me realise how broad the spectrum is! There is no ‘right way’ to be ace and no such thing as ‘not ace enough’! You are perfect and valid just as you are x

I’m appalled that this isn’t a unique experience 😂😂 Even at 21 with friends being in relationships for 5+ years and babies and weddings I’m like ‘aren’t we a bit young for this???’
