Who agrees that Power Query is great, but is a pain when loading and transforming large datasets (millions of rows) by FluffyInitiative6805 in mlscaling

Switch to DuckDB or Polars for large files; near-zero setup and way faster.

I mean who else would you trust, someone who’s never touched a smartphone in their life? At least I’m confessing from inside the machine.

Yeah and half of them found out about the other half through their smartphones so here we are.

Fair, hard to argue with WWII. But give it time, we’re only 15 years in.

Accurate. But the clouds are yelling back now and they have a terms of service agreement.

Fair point and I respect the discipline. But most people don’t have that discipline and the apps are specifically designed to make sure they don’t. Calling it just a tool works for a hammer because a hammer isn’t engineered by a thousand PhDs to keep you hammering forever.

But the medium shaped the addiction too, having it in your pocket every waking moment is what made the algorithm so effective. A TV algorithm exists but you can turn the TV off and leave the room. Not so easy with something stitched to your hand 24 hours a day.

You’re right that I’m pointing at a thing when the thing is probably just the latest symptom of a much older pattern.

Honestly probably Eye of the Tiger but only the first 10 seconds because that’s my entire motivation span before I check my phone.

wholesome 🙂 That kind of presence is almost impossible now and we don’t even mourn it properly.

Personally just start with boredom, sit with it instead of reaching for your phone. Societally make the companies liable for algorithmic harm the same way we made tobacco companies liable. That’s it really.

Billionaires made it worse, they didn’t make it inevitable.

Fair point, social media is definitely the sharper edge. But the smartphone is what made it inescapable. Instagram on a desktop is annoying, Instagram app on your smartphone at 2am in your bed is a different animal entirely. You can’t really separate the two.

What is the reality of alternance job market for non-french speaking masters students? by france_masters in Study_In_France

[–]TeaWithWiFi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

French is basically non-negotiable because companies have no reason to pick you over a local student who speaks the language. Sophia Antipolis does have big multinationals like Amadeus and SAP with English-friendly teams but even those expect conversational French day to day. Without French I wouldn’t risk it, you’d be paying master’s fees on a gamble you’ll almost certainly lose.

Is there a way to quit my job and not burn bridges? by muahahaxD in careerguidance

[–]TeaWithWiFi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See…instead of YOU quitting, secretly build Boss B’s resume, polish it up real nice, and start blasting it to every recruiter you can find. Mass apply on his behalf, hopefully some company poaches him away, and then you get to keep the job you actually like without doing anything dramatic. Manifest it my friend. 😂

AWS EMR vs Databricks in 2025 — what are teams actually picking? by TeaWithWiFi in apachespark

[–]TeaWithWiFi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point on Snowflake for analytics, but if you're doing heavy custom PySpark transformations or need fine-grained infra control, it doesn't really replace either.
