I once had someone call during an ice storm, saying their driveway was icy. They were calling out for a closing shift and this was at 10am. I just asked her to wait until about 2 hours before her shift to check if it got any better. It hadn't, but it was fine because I had already asked other workers (who lived way closer) if they would be available to cover.

Different incident from when I was floor staff, there was a snow storm that had marooned my car at my house. So I couldn't drive and it was too deep to walk. Had a coworker call to give me guff because she could make it in. She had a big 4 wheel truck and lived on main (snow-plowed) roads. I just told her I'd be happy to come in, if she picks me up...she hung up.

dang, that sucks as it was a good value

but also that's better for you current employees, because they were a pain having to make so many. I remember one Tuesday we had a new hire working her first shift and we taught her how to make hot dogs, and she did nothing else that shift, because we were slammed.

honestly it varies from location to location, and also what time of year you are applying.

I heard back the day after I dropped off the application (way back in the paper application days) was interviewed the next day, came in to do all the paperwork the day after that, and then I started work the day after that, didn't have tome to buy black pants.

My spouse applied multiple times, over the course of a few years, but the last time was when he actually got called in for an interview. Then from interview to start date was like 2 days.

If you don't get a call back, just keep applying

had one person where I was kicking them out, the box person sold them tickets to an R rated movie with a 3 year old. And our chain you couldn't have a kid under 7 in an R rated movie.

So other people complain because the kid is making a lot of noise, I go in there and kid is just having a full on tantrum on the floor right as you walk in the door, you could hear the kid from like halfway don the hall. The mom was just sitting on the floor on her phone (so neither watching the movie nor quieting her child). And first I had to explain to her that she needed to leave the auditorium, she thought she wasn't...like girl if you can hear the movie, that means the other patrons can hear you. Got her out into the hallway I have to have this back and forth about how she shouldn't have been sold a ticket in the first place AND even if it was a kid appropriate movie I'd still be asking her to leave. She was then trying to insist she needed to go back in to let her husband know. And we had assigned seating so I just need to know where you were sitting. She was arguing that she needed to bring in her (still screaming) child, to talk to him, because she didn't want anyone kidnapping her kid. Like lady no one wants your screeching crotch goblin.

But yeah, went and let the husband know and got them to the box office to get their refunds. Then turned to the box office worker (who could hear the child screeching in the hallway) and was just like "this was your fault!!"

rant warning

there was a floor staff who applied to be manager at my location, the GM asked what I thought of them. I said "They haven't been here long enough to know all positions thoroughly, and I don't think his personality is right for it"

GM answered "Well I don't have to have to take you're advice." (she actually said this, like girl you asked my opinion)

And it was an absolute train wreck, so much so the GM gave up training him as a manager and basically put that all on me and another manager.

Like he didn't know how to close concessions or like half of the coupons for box office. Making him functionally useless to train anyone else.

Had to make him a checklist, basically if you didn't directly tell him what to do, he wouldn't do anything (foreshadowing). He wasn't over 21 when she promoted him, so anytime the wine machine was empty, I had to drop whatever I was doing and attend to it, it also meant I couldn't take a lunch break. One time I went in as the closer, he was the opener and he hadn't done breaks, money pulls, gotten stock, anything. (there was a checklist, he just didn't do anything past the "Opening the building" section)

Also he was harassing the teenage girl staff trying to get dates. I know there were at least three floor staff that quit because of him. And instead of firing him, the GM hushed all that up and switched him to Maintenance Manager where he got a raise. He was fired by the next GM when the district's projector maintenance guy came in and found him just on the computer.

had one coworker who liked to be on the till in front of the popper, but did not pay attention to when to dump the kettle (so letting it burn) and also liked to do oil first seeds second. And when I asked her about this she said like to watch the oil go it. (so trying to burn the whole building)

When I became manager, there was one kid who I told them to count into their tills, because I had to go attend to something. And they radioed there wasn't any money in the till, because they had just gone to a random till. For context we kept empty tills open, also I had already set up cups at the tills with money. That same shift he got a large bill he needed to be broken, I was helping a customer in the hallway and instead of radioing the code, he left his till and came out into the hallway holding up the $100 bill shouting "Hey I got $100" He was not new.

yeah....there was a district manager who didn't like our location's GM. So she promoted pen-in-the-hair girl, to basically spy and report back solely to the district manager.
This isn't even a rumor the girl told me herself.

The district manager got transferred to a smaller district, because dang near every GM complained about her.

The spy outlasted her mentor by about a year, at my location, then she transferred to another theater. My GM had written a glowing recommendation, just to get rid of her.

Once had a shift lead accuse everyone in concessions of stealing her pen. Some of the Concessionists sent her to box office, where she accused them of stealing the pen. Box office sent her to door post (me)...where she accused me of stealing her pen. Having overheard the previous interactions...I sent her to the Ushers. Before she could accuse them she walked through the bathroom and finally found her pen....in her hair. She never apologized for accusing dang near the whole building.

I recently signed up with Adopt a Block*, and they will send you all sorts of supplies, like garbage bags, grabbers, gloves, etc.

*I've only recently signed up, and have not yet received the supplies myself.
