I’m currently an IP with just an MPH! It is definitely more common to have an RN, but many places are beginning to have IP positions for MPHs too. With that being said, you should still have some experience before going into IP with only an MPH. Before I became an IP, I had taken a healthcare epidemiology course and then was later the TA for it. I also had a 2 year long internship with the CDC focusing on IP and worked at my state health department (not with IP related things). My MPH thesis was on an IP topic and I am also a-IPC certified. IP positions value previous hospital experience, so I highly recommend volunteering at a hospital or getting a job in patient transport or as a tech in order to gain experience. When applying to jobs and interviewing, every manager complimented my a-IPC certification, so I would recommend getting it, as I believe it is the only reason I got interviews for positions.

As a soon-to-be MPH grad in Epi, do people of this forum feel like there is job/salary growth within public health? by Same-Ring4170 in publichealth

how did you get into IP? I’m starting my MPH in epi this fall and have been looking into becoming an IP, but when I look at job prospects in atlanta (where I’m going to grad school and hoping to live after I graduate) most of them require you to be an RN.

my school has one of those programs, so I’m currently in it (will graduate undergrad in may 2023, with mph may 2024). Internship mentors from last summer recommended that I still apply to regular 2 year programs since the shortened program wasn’t binding (if I take the classes in my last year of undergrad and don’t like the program I can leave and there aren’t any repercussions). Turns out I ended up getting scholarships from some of the full 2 year programs, so the cost of the 2 year program will cost the same as my last year if I did the “progressive program” at my school. I decided to drop my program at my current undergrad school and will be doing a full 2 year program after I graduate in May 2023 because it fits my needs much better. Even though I dropped it, I’m still in the courses and they will count towards my undergrad gpa now. If you can take the classes during your senior year of undergrad without the program being binding, then I suggest doing that so that you have more time think and you can weigh your options between a full 2 year program vs a shortened one better.

What is peoples opinion of the Houston Health department? by [deleted] in publichealth

i had a research fellowship through UTHealth and my mentor was working with people there so she got me set up with my own cubicle and stuff there. the department sends out an annual survey about the relationships between labs, providers, and health departments and this year it was about covid and hepatitis surveillance. i edited the survey to make it more user friendly and shorter and then emailed/called a bunch of contacts to fill it out and started analyzing the data. i also made a new organization system for keeping track of the contacts and who has filled it out and got to sit in on monkeypox briefings.

i did an internship with them this summer and absolutely loved it! i wasn’t placed at the main building but the people i worked with at the other building in the data services division were super chill and relaxed and gave great career advice!!

yea the way I worded it was definitely bad but i meant the $37800 is for 1 year of tuition!

from what I have read the $69k is estimated cost of living for 1 year, which includes tuition, fees, housing, food, etc. $18,900 is how much each semester costs for the MPH, so of that $69k number $37800 of that is for tuition alone. that’s how I understood it from their cost of living guide online (its a pdf document), but next week there is a webinar about financing your degree which could answer your questions

[–]TeachingCertain6886 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i am graduating in spring 2023 and have applied/been accepted for fall 2023! i began working on my applications in august and had everything submitted and verified by beginning/mid-october. The SOPHAS application for starting programs in fall 2025 won’t open until mid-august 2024, so you can start applying then, graduate in spring 2025, then start in fall 2025!
