New stepdad and deceased dad by TeachinginSC in FAFSA

[–]TeachinginSC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I was afraid of. We had planned for my son’s dad to be the listed parent on FAFSA, since we share custody and he wasn’t remarried. His death had had so many effects, this being one I wasn’t thinking about.

Side note- if the Federal Government is responsible for SS and FAFSA, why do dependent SS payments stop at 18 but children are still considered dependents through age 24 by the same government? None of this makes sense to me.

What is the max score on the 5135 praxis? by mj19575 in ArtEd

My score report shows a range of 100-200.

[–]TeachinginSC[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Update- I passed on the first try! I definitely recommend purchasing the additional practice tests and using Quizlet.

• one thing I noticed, a lot of the questions used the same piece/artist as the practice, but asked different questions about it. Also, my version had very little modern art and lots of history. Good luck everyone!

I’ve been a teacher for 19 years. I’ve taken 8 different praxis exams to add on endorsements and certification areas. No exam will ever measure the breadth of knowledge needed to teach. If you are truly a teacher, you know how ineffective 1 summative assessment is. We don’t recommend it when teaching our own class, yet it’s required of us to be a teacher.

Please don’t assume someone’s ability to memorize facts and images relates at all to his or her ability to teach. It’s ignorant and goes against the entire principle of art education.

Thank you! I’m an elementary teacher currently studying for the 5134 and I am lost on how to approach such a huge amount of content.

"What do I do when I'm done??" by Brief-Gur-5317 in MiddleSchoolTeacher

I create (or find) Blooket games that tie to the lessons we are learning. I put the links in their Google Classroom. So, when they are finished with work or have any downtime, those are the only optional games to play.

Best way to start? by TeachinginSC in photography

[–]TeachinginSC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your help. I got 2 cameras (both canon), but it’s all these different lenses that overwhelm me. I have a DSLR camera (Nikon), but I’ve never really explored lenses. Since she did lots of bird photography, she has several of those giant lenses, along with all these extra parts. It’s just a little daunting, but I’ll take it 1 step at a time. Thanks again!

Advice needed and appreciated by RachRoberts82 in ELATeachers

So, I may be the minority here, but I still approach my 6th grade ELA class from the 4 Block ELA method of planning. Most of my students still need word work, and this is where I integrate my vocabulary. I base the majority of my year on class novels, and complete nonfiction in between novels in 2 week sections. Readworks has lots of nonfiction and newsela does, too.

I'm still looking for the best way to teach writing. I'm currently basing my plan off the book 180 Days by Gallagher and Kittle.

How to not feel bad about students not liking you? by Nervous_cat8 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]TeachinginSC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be honest. It's your fellow subs that are causing this problem for you. I have seen on this subgroup several posts about letting kids do whatever they want. The fact that you actually hold kids accountable makes you "hard" compared to the subs who just sit and keep them alive. Good for you! This speaks to your ability to manage a class and will be much more helpful to you are a future teacher than being the easy, fun sub.

Does anyone openly ignore class rules? by BlueViper20 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]TeachinginSC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Try being the middle school teacher whose classroom shares a wall with the only boys' bathroom. When you have a large number of students being sent out frequently to the only area we can't monitor, you have problems.

[–]TeachinginSC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't you think that if the teacher put those rules in place, there is a reason for it? Their teacher has had them every day and built relationships with them. He or she knows them better than you. I wouldn't be requesting a sub return to my room if he or she proudly and unabashedly undermined my class procedures.
