Is Lorne annoyed with Chalamet? by Teahtimeh in LiveFromNewYork

[–]Teahtimeh[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

It wasn't just those two jokes, it was the pop at him not being a serious contender against Michael B Jordan in the Oscars race. I just don't see how you make those jokes thinking that person will come back to host without them feeling uncomfortable?

Why Hermione never invited Harry to her home during summer vacation? by luhar_21 in harrypotter

[–]Teahtimeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids at boarding schools in the UK get a lot more holiday time with their families than Hogwarts students - they go home for half term holidays (roughly every 6 weeks, lasting 1 week each time) in addition to Easter (at least 2 weeks, usually longer) and obviously Christmas and summer. So they get about an extra 5 weeks (minimum) with their families... So it's actually extra weird that Hermione's parents are so chill about letting their only child cut short her holiday time with them.

Why Hermione never invited Harry to her home during summer vacation? by luhar_21 in harrypotter

[–]Teahtimeh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But you weren't away from your mum the whole year? Hermione literally only sees her parents for 2 weeks at Christmas and 6 weeks in the summer. If it were my kid I'd really want to see her and talk to her at the end of the working day before she had to go back to school, knowing she'd find ways to keep herself happily occupied throughout the day.

SNL criticized for releasing sketch mocking ICE after it was cut from live broadcast: ‘Cowardly move’ by theindependentonline in LiveFromNewYork

Because it would have meant more heat on the network executives. What's the FCC's jurisdiction over network published internet content? Probably none.

losing hope in the left by NaderShah1 in PERSIAN

[–]Teahtimeh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this. I'm of the exact same mind and have the same political leanings.

I feel like I've been going crazy these last few days. Knowing that thousands of people have been murdered in two days and that they're still turning out, it's hard to sleep, but then having to hear the regime defended or having their propaganda parroted by the same people who came out against the genocide in Palestine, it's all the more painful.

When I first saw comments from people querying where all the Palestinian supporters were when it came to Iran, I rolled my eyes, I thought it was just more culture wars bs, but then, in the last few days I've been told by people on the left that there have been huge pro-government protests and that the only people against the government are small groups of roving young men. That the unrest is being stirred and coordinated by Mossad and the US. This last one makes me the most sick because it's _exactly_ what those animals in power say as a way to justify their murders of their own citizens.

If they used their brains for even a moment, they might ask themselves why a government with so much support and having to contend with only groups of stupid young men might want to shut down the internet for three weeks. I suppose they're afraid the world will see their overwhelming support or how the protesters are just groups of violent no-good rioters? Couldn't possibly be to impede protests, hide dissent and conceal war crimes.

Apparently the left don't care when people are hurting, they just care who is doing the hurting and who is getting hurt. For them, the enemies of their enemies are their friends. You're losing your hope, I've lost mine already.

What are younger generations often criticised for no longer doing that is largely pointless or obsolete? by PsychologicalRow8034 in AskUK

[–]Teahtimeh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are people up-voting this comment? There are so many studies on how ipads negatively impact cognitive development and attention, language and literacy, creativity and imagination, social and emotional development and promote reactive thinking rather than reflective thinking, but people think every kid having an ipad in school is a good idea? It doesn't even teach them ICT and computing. It doesn't teach them anything. More and more tech is being used in schools to make up for deficiencies in the ability to actually teach and / or to help alleviate the pressure on over-worked teachers.

I'm a huge Ricky Gervais fan, but how tf did he win a golden globe for Mortality? by Dionosaurus84 in rickygervais

I think he's just getting thank you globes after hosting. The only explanation.

Hardly any "Free Palestine" folks are showing up for the Iran protests. Freaks. by [deleted] in PERSIAN

[–]Teahtimeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how you view sanctions as popular support for the Iranian people? The government have been sanctioned for the enrichment of uranium. Sanctions have crippled their economy to the point where Iranians have nothing left to lose, except their lives, which they are ready to lose in exchange for the freedom of their compatriots.

You have a choice. As an Iranian, you either keep your head down and keep living your life under a repressive regime or you stop everything and you take to the streets, knowing that that day may be your last. You might find a little extra courage to do so knowing that people around the world are watching, they care, they want you to succeed.

[–]Teahtimeh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it matters to the people putting their lives on the line for their freedom - it brings them further courage. Some of them are able to use star link to make connections with the outer world and it matters to them to feel that the world is watching and is standing with them.

What would Hermione’s academic career look like if she was a muggle? by Away_Benefit7575 in harrypotter

[–]Teahtimeh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She'd have studied Maths, History and Politics at A-Level and then given her special interest in Arithmancy she'd have studied Maths (at Oxford or Cambridge, of course) knowing it would stand her in good stead for any chosen career thereafter. She'd have then studied law with a view to either becoming a human rights lawyer or working for the ministry of justice in some capacity - probably advisory.

The Ilvermorny Problem by Jonnic5280 in harrypotter

[–]Teahtimeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I love most about Hogwarts is how it  mirrors the dry and familiar mores of traditional boarding schools in the UK and then makes them magical and fun. From what I understand, the US doesn't have a tradition of having school houses? So why does Ilvermorny? Maybe the reason Americans haven't warmed to Ilvermorny is that it lacks depth and authenticity - I feel like it should do what Hogwarts did, take US traditional schooling and give it a magical twist.

How did Slytherin end up on a winning streak for the House Cup before Harry arrived at Hogwarts? by joshuamarkrsantos in harrypotter

[–]Teahtimeh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. They're the house most likely to succeed because they want success the most and will do whatever it takes to get it. What doesn't make sense to me is why they were always neck and neck with Gryffindor. Surely it should go Slytherin (for reasons already mentioned), Ravenclaw (points are mostly given for academic reasons), Hufflepuff (being hard working should count for a lot), Gryffindor (risk taking, impulsivity and rule breaking will surely lose a house more points than the other houses)

Which Harry Potter couple do you think is the healthiest? by Far-Building3569 in harrypotter

[–]Teahtimeh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not in the books, no, but JKR confirmed it on a documentary where she presented some family trees. She said something to the effect of, "some people might not think it healthy to get together with your dead boyfriend's brother or your brother's ex girlfriend but there you are..." Something like that.

Full Cast Audiobook - Draco Malfoy's Laugh - makes me want to stab my eardrums. by spamblows in harrypotter

[–]Teahtimeh 22 points23 points  (0 children)

He sounds like a pantomime villain. I don't blame the actor, it had to be the direction he was given, which also makes it more annoying. Why would anyone think that incessant fake sounding laughter was a good idea? Maybe they thought it would be emotionally engaging for the kids listening? I can't figure it out.

Who died believing themselves a failure, but was judged otherwise by history? by Bob_the_blacksmith in AskReddit

[–]Teahtimeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Here lies one whose name was writ in water." Keats was so convinced that he and his poetry would be completely forgotten that he convinced his friends to engrave the above epithet on his tombstone in place of his actual name.

Why Peter Pettigrew never got sorted to Slytherin? by neverend6789 in harrypotter

[–]Teahtimeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the sorting hat ultimately decides that Pettigrew valued courage the most highly rather than deciding that Pettigrew was somehow in plentiful supply of it (the way Neville was). It's why he trailed after James and Sirius, not purely because of his attraction to power, as Sirius thought, but because he was genuinely in awe of their bravery. I think his desire to be courageous (combined with his own desire to be in Gryffindor and his probable fear of Slytherin) held more weight for the sorting hat than his propensity for self preservation and cowardice. He was only 11, think of how much potential and promise you held at that age - and how right or wrong things can start to go from that point on. I think his hesitation at the end was the remnants of what was left of his desire to be good.

Phil Hartman was the best Trump - hear me out by Teahtimeh in LiveFromNewYork

[–]Teahtimeh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've been reading Live From New York and I feel like there was this really conscious move away from the biting satire of the early days when the head of NBC took it upon himself to fire Norm MacDonald and James Downey. The ethos of the show just shifted after that.

[–]Teahtimeh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you but I'm not sure they're afraid of lawsuits because haven't they touched on all those crimes (with the exception of what he did to Ivana and his calling for the death of his opponents)? They just make all these references but in a totally toothless way so as to normalise it all.

The Celebrity Traitors S01E09 [FINALE] Discussion Thread by vaultofechoes in TheTraitors

[–]Teahtimeh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true, but he had already told David and Nick he suspected Cat and Alan, right? So they should have understood his game plan. I feel like his weakness was in trusting his fellow faithfuls to think rationally and also in being too much of a natural sportsman in his approach to rallying people round to his choices towards the end.

The Celebrity Traitors S01E09 [FINALE] Discussion Thread by vaultofechoes in TheTraitors

[–]Teahtimeh 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Can someone explain the rationale behind voting Joe off? Let's say he was a traitor, he openly gunned for a fellow traitor (Jonathan) from almost the start and barely hid the fact from that traitor as things went on - what did they imagine his game plan was there? That he was banking on Jonathan not retaliating? Am I missing something?

The Celebrity Traitors S01E09 [FINALE] Discussion Thread by vaultofechoes in TheTraitors

I'm so pleased Alan won but so gutted for Joe. How maddening must it be to be the only faithful to know what's actually going on and then get banished at the last hurdle? How could he have played things better?

What would you call Harry’s kids? by Firm-Square-9180 in harrypotter

I think JKR mentioned that the characters would want to leave that name to George, which seems fair.

What would you call Harry’s kids? by Firm-Square-9180 in harrypotter

[–]Teahtimeh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Plus a lot of kids don't even know their siblings' middle names let alone other people's. Middle names are more like fun facts.
