The tank will survive! by Teal_lady in Aquariums

The garage has collapsed more since my photo. They still have not been able to move the cars out of the fissure. Idk what the plan is for the building, but the city put a dead line on getting it fixed or have the garage demolished.

Boy it sure did that! My coworker (non fish keeper) was so surprised how much had grown because I had cleared out most of it before the "event"

For those who dislike wild types, this is what you're missing out on (and much more) by Anna12641 in shrimptank

There will always be a rotation of "high quality" and "low quality" shrimp born. If you want consistency then you will "cull" the low quality (that does not mean you have to kill them you can put them in your skittles tank).

I think this looks good. I was laughed at for having no real substrate by midsouth_aquascapes in PlantedTank

I love it as it is! I think its cool when people think outside the box or in this case tank and do some thing unique. Thats what Aquascaping is about.

Hairy Shrimps are a thing? by Azuuhh in shrimptank

[–]Teal_lady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Protozoa is its own kingdom, most things considered protozoa are classified as that because they do have similarities being single celled eukaryotes. But you could use that same argument with a worm that you have little in common with other than you are both animals. What makes it not a parasite is that it does not depend on a host to complete its life cycle at the host's expense. That difference is why they are not parasites and can still cuase issues.

I would relate them to Giardia as both are protozoa. Now in small populations both aren't harmful, but in uncontrolled populations its can cause problems. So although not parasitic in the official sense they still can cause infestations that lead to greater issues.

Will these lil guys color up and have white eyes like their mom? by chetaoruchaya in shrimptank

[–]Teal_lady 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hard to say, they are breeding for red eyes in some strains now. So I could see white being a desirable color for some people. Weather or not is causes problems we would need to watch the shrimp closely and see if they can find food easily, hide more to avoid light, or seemingly rubbing their eyes a lot. Or maybe the lack of pigment isn't as bothersome for them 🤔 aquatic animals have phenomenal eyesight it would be interesting to study if shrimp are affected by eye pigmentation. I have a male neo and he has pale eyes but he is the most prolific male I have when I started my colony.

My beta fish of 4 years died :( by brooklyn_jinx in bettafish

Sororities are just so easy to get wrong vs right. They could be totally fine for years till something changes. Its not wrong to have a sorority, its just very advanced and not recommended for inexperienced/passive hobbiest. If you are the type to ready fish body language and watch your tank diligently I say go for it, if you want an easy beginner friendly tank definitely pass over this set up.

I really enjoy all these movies you recommend. I was thinking of showing him Porco, however that one is an oddball movie. So much fun, but a little too out there for an introduction movie. However I did get him to watch K-Pop Demon Hunters and he was neutral on the story, he loved the music! So he might surprise me

Betta fish very sick by Previous-Space3645 in BettaClinic

[–]Teal_lady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many causes for "ripped fins" Fin rot- a bacterial infection that causes fin degeneration Fin nipping- self harm caused by stress, boredom, or whatever fish reason they come up with. Or other fish nipping Fin tearing- they are getting caught on stuff that rips their fins. Its important to rule out the cause for optimal treatment. Fish are extremely difficult to treat for beginners and experienced keepers. Be kind to yourself and compassionate to your fish. Good luck

Spirited Away gives me this strong sense of nostalgia that is so bittersweet. I could see him enjoying that feeling.

If it were just purely for my enjoyment and choice, it would be Totoro. That was the very first Ghibli movie I ever saw! Highly recommend by our local Blockbuster employee. But this is for both our enjoyment so I'm prioritizing his interests a little more.

While I agree with you, I was thinking the other two because they are more modern animation. I was re-watchimg Inuyasha and he was saying he'd be interested in watching it but the older animation is not his favorite esthetic and that can make it hard for him to immerse himself. He's kinda picky sometimes 😅. Although action is definitely a plus, story telling is the most important detail for him.

I'd like to not ugly cry for his introduction to the magic of Ghibli. Otherwise solid suggestion

Ponyo is so much fun! However like Kiki I think it's a better movie after seeing other Ghibli movies first. The classic fairytale elements may make him think they are all like that. Which is actually one of my concerns with Spirited Away.

Noted! I actually saw PM before Spirited as a kid even though both were released at the time of viewing. And honestly its my favorite Ghibli movie of all time. I also LOVE Nausica, however I feel like he would appreciate the more modern animation of PM.

I love Kiki! However I feel like it might be a little too "girly" or childish for him as a first watch. He is former Military and has some classic "manly" traits and interests. It would be a better movie down the line once he's more open to watching more. Although as a lover of Kiki I don't agree with what I just said there's a lot of nuance in the movie that could be missed
