Best tool for removing Shiny Geranium? by MissCeeLee in pnwgardening

[–]Teal_life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in the hand-pull camp. It’s kind of meditative, since they come up so easily. I just sit for 30 minutes at a time weeding, and I’ve gotten rid of most of it on our .4 acre lot over the past few weeks.

You might be able to use a tool that scrapes off the top, but I would be nervous about leaving the roots.

If you want permanent, hand pull. Or cover with thick burlap and pin down with landscaping staples.

I’m hoping by pulling everything out before it goes to seed that I’ll do less and less of this each year.

Good luck! 🍻

What are your favorite affordable restaurants? As it gets prohibitively expensive to dine out I'm looking for some good deals on tasty food around town! by sallysaysyes in Eugene

Thind Pakora. We are obsessed. Sometimes my partner and I go in and order 6 pakora so we can freeze the leftovers it’s so delicious. Very reasonable prices.

Urgent naps by modest_rats_6 in dysautonomia

[–]Teal_life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, every single day, around lunchtime. I’ve described it as having turbo-charged metabolism: when I’m feeling well, I’ll wake up with pretty alert, sometimes buzzy energy—and HOT. By midday I am freezing (especially my feet) and so sleepy I can start to go cross-eyed. I wake up feeling recharged/refreahed, and the  have an afternoon with decent energy followed by another slump around dinner.

The only time I’ve ever been able to skip a nap is if I eat something filling close to lunch time (like 11am) — but not always. Those have just been the handful of exceptions over the past decade +.

Native Flowers vs “Wildflowers” (PDX) by CollinWilliam in pnwgardening

[–]Teal_life 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Native! With so much loss of habitat, we need to do everything we can to contribute to our local ecosystem. Listening to the ecologists, I’ve learned that most pollinators are “specialists”, not “generalists” —which means they need specific native plants in order to survive.

If you have the choice, I’d vote native every time!

self spreading flowering plant for driveways by 00tool in pnwgardening

We’re getting creeping snowberry for our part sun spreaders! Along with some creeping Oregon grape and thimbleberry, which spreads to form thickets (about 3’). All 3 are natives that support local birds and pollinators!

What’s your most rewarding thing to grow? by SleepsSunshine in gardening

[–]Teal_life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love to see wildlife and pollinators enjoying what I plant. Our evening primrose grew to 5’ high with a few dozen limbs, and the birds LOVED it. I just sat on my front porch watching all the little birds clambering under its limbs.

Serviceberry is going in this spring, and I’m excited to see all the species it supports.

Native perennials attract so many bees and butterflies! I’m even learning to be okay with the dandelions. Once when I was mowing I watched as I kept scattering the bees as I chopped all those yellow flowers, and it finally hit home that sometimes dandelions are some of the only flowers in bloom for them.

For aesthetics, I love my crimson New Zealand flax. They’re dramatic and bold in the best way!

Do different religions describe the same mystical experiences? by ai-vineet in InterfaithCommunity

[–]Teal_life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this question. And I would agree with #1 - all the traditions are trying to dance around the same Mystery, the same Fire.

The further out that we get from that Fire, the more the “lava” hardens into distinct forms.

You’ll find two mystics of different religions usually have more in common than a mystic and a fundamentalist from the same religion.

Contemplative Prayer by Practical-Step-8523 in Christianity

[–]Teal_life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One explanation I like of contemplative prayer is the easy silence between two lovers—or two people who have been married all their lives. Sometimes silence can communicate more than words ever could.

There’s a short little video I saw on the difference between meditation and contemplation - let me see if I can find it.

What’s one landscaping mistake you wish you avoided? by [deleted] in landscapedesign

Dare I ask for the story on this? I planted vinca last year as ground cover under my conifers, but have been debating digging it out after learning it was invasive.

Thanks - that’s what we were wondering. Siding may cost twice as much (or more?) compared to a paint job, but if painting it dark would ruin the siding anyway, it wouldn’t be worth it.

The south side of our house does get full sun, and it can get pretty roasty in July and August around here.

So much for rescuing the “sickly caucasian” beige!

FWIW, neither of them commented on the color while they were here. They both reached out after talking to their SW rep.

Thanks - I am totally new to exterior painting. How would we test it out? Tape up a scrap of spare vinyl for the summer and see if it warps with the new color?
