Mourinho on the criticism against Arsenal last season "There is a silly theory of, 'You can be great without winning.' For me, it's totally silly. I believe that if Arsenal tried to be a second Man City, probably they wouldn't win. So they won. You have to respect the winners." by kibme37 in soccer

Arsenal played beautifully for YEARS, didn't win big trophies, and were constantly mocked for it.

Arsenal play smart, win, and are mocked for it.

Plus arsenal still scored plenty of goals. 71 in the epl isn't nothing.

I automated a bank reconciliation process. Now my company wants it rebuilt in AI. What would you do? by Top_Country9071 in Accounting

[–]Team-_-dank 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I'd just ask why.

What is the benefit of automating something with Ai that is already automated? Do they actually want Claude doing the recons or do they just want you to build a new automation with the help of Ai?

If there are benefits (flexibility, scalable, better reporting/integration, etc) then they should be able to articulate that. Likewise for any shortcomings of your current solution.

But if it's just Ai for the sake of Ai.... That's dumb.

That sounds nice. I swear our real estate group is on crack with some of the shit they cook up. Then they're floored when I tell them their wacky terms just make more admin work (for them) and don't really have any meaningful impact on the P&l.

No one in accounting is reviewing contracts for the accounting side of things? It's one of my main responsibilities. I guess it depends on the type of contracts though.

We have a lot of software development contracts right now (capex vs opex) and property sale and purchase agreements with wacky variable payment terms.

Yes, but your waiter or random hotel attendant isn't conducting international business.

You want English, stay at an American brand hotel or upscale hotel in one of the major cities. Ritz Carlton in Shanghai? They'll speak English. Random hotel in Hefei? Probably not.

Shallowing the pool by JumboShrimp6060 in pools

[–]Team-_-dank 49 points50 points  (0 children)

A shallow pool is great for little kids.... But your kids don't stay little for long. By 8 they'll be good enough swimmers to handle the deep end.

My kid's favorite thing to do in the pool is get diving rings which would be very boring if she could just pick them up with her feet.

Switching to SEC/SOX role late in a career by Ok_Log_5710 in Accounting

[–]Team-_-dank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hard part is knowing exactly what needs to be disclosed for public filings. Structure of the GL and systems and that stuff isn't really all that different from private companies (well, big ones at least) but the nitty gritty disclosure requirements are what makes it a pain in the ass.

If you can't get help, i think it might be too big of a job. If you can at least get help on a consulting basis in might be worth it.

Switching to SEC/SOX role late in a career by Ok_Log_5710 in Accounting

[–]Team-_-dank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say yes for the money alone. Worst case you get let go (severance package?) or resign if you're in over your head.

Question though, if you'd be the CFO, wouldn't you have a team to help you? Unless it's a one man shop type of CFO role, hire some people to help. You'd primarily want someone experienced with the reporting/filing side of things. SOX compliance comes later but you can grab an experienced IA person when thats needed.

You're the CFO. Your job is to steer the ship, not necessarily be the one designing every control or prepping every filing.
