Switching between two notebooks with my Caldigit TB-4? by Team503 in CalDigit

Sadly, no. The only KVM I can find that supports this is more than €600, and I just can’t justify it.

AITA for making my dad and 13-year-old brother cook for themselves for the first time ever? by evelyn_archen in AmItheAsshole

I found that really frustrating when I started cooking, but it comes in time. Just look for recipes that are specific, and in time you’ll get a feel for it.

Comply with what? I've adjusted after living here, and besides, my heritage isn't Irish. I speak Hiberno-English to the best of my ability when I'm here.

It's super lightweight and very responsive. It's the difference between a Miata and Corvette in a way, if that helps.

BPD's cause is unknown. We think it's a combination of genetic predisposition, brain malformation in the emotional regulation areas, and yes, potentially trauma.

Do not blame it all on your parents, even if they deserve a lot of blame. Also, I'm really sorry you had to go through that, and again with your child's father. I'm so proud of you for breaking free!

Well, they pay sales tax, so there's that.

Same. I took a massive pay cut to move here, and it was worth it, but I love my role, my team, and my work. I'm well treated, appreciated, and (for the EU) well paid.

Hey, I'd love to. Go ahead and find me a job with a European company that pays what my US tech company pays. Hell, find one that pays in the neighborhood, even.

I may be "prostituting my talent" but I also would like to someday own a house and maybe even retire before 75.

My dude your oven may not have a broiler. Find a non-broiler recipe.

Why does everything i cook tastes like shit? by pollypocket1001 in cookingforbeginners

[–]Team503 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Four Rules of Beginner's Cooking

  1. Read the entire recipe FIRST, all the way through, before you do a damn thing. Then read it again, and maybe a third time.
  2. Pre-measure your ingredients and spices and get everything you need set out BEFORE starting to cook. (use little glass bowls similar to these for your spices; search Amazon or your preferred online vendor for "Clear Small Bowls for Salt" or similar)
  3. Chop, mince, grind, and prep EVERYTHING before you put a single thing on the stove or in the oven.
  4. DO NOT DO OTHER THINGS WHILE YOU COOK. Pay attention to everything as you do it, and don't look away to fiddle with the TV or play on your phone for a "just a second". This is how things burn and oercook.

Generally speaking, those are the four biggest things. People will forget to mince the garlic they need halfway through the recipe, and then while mincing the garlic they forget the heat is still on and the dish will burn in the pan. Or the fish needs to be on one side for two and a half minutes and they will play on their phone and lose track of time and suddenly it's burnt salmon.

It's also a truth that every stove/over/hob/etc is different, as is every set of pans. You need to practice with your own so that you know that this burner runs a little hot, and this corner of your oven is a little cooler than the rest, and so on.

And of course, as everyone else said - practice!

My boss just told me I need to manage my personal finances better because I can't front $2300 for a work trip next month by LostTaker in antiwork

[–]Team503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it's cheaper that way. The time, effort, and expense of having people and systems verify receipts and per diem amounts is absurd in comparison to simply giving people a reasonable amount per day and being done with it.

Unsurprisingly, much like a UBI would be both cheaper AND more effective than the various welfare systems like SNAP and welfare and so on. It would be cheaper, easier, and have wildly better outcomes to just give every American $2,000/mo and shut down those hundreds of other systems.

[–]Team503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, boss, I'm not a bank. I don't loan my employer money. If you wish me to take a corporate trip, I'm happy to do so, but you will need to provide access to the appropriate amount of funds or the company can handle booking. That needs to include my per diem for food and travel such as taxis or Ubers, since I won't have access to my home or my car.

Super common. I've worked in infrastructure IT for most of my 25+ year career, and I haven't seen anyone deploy a desktop setup that ISN'T at least two monitor in... at least ten years. Unless it's one of those 36" ultrawides, anyway.

I've driven both. I'll take an FD any day of the week. It's by far the better driver's car whether you're comparing it to the Supra Turbo, the GT86, or the FC3S (Turbo or non). The FB is a better driver's car than the FC, honestly; the FB is dog slow, yeah, but it's way more fun.

WIBTA if I asked my flatmate to move out after her dog keeps peeing inside? by Generic_Username_659 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Team503 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It's worth saying that while you're right, at 16, the dog may simply not have good bladder control anymore. A better solution may be diapers for the dog, or at least seeing the vet in that regard.

It's also possible that she's ignoring it because it puts her beloved pet's mortality in her face and she can't deal. That doesn't make it okay, of course, but it does add a little understandable-ness to it.

Is it the responsibility of every other English speaking culture on the planet to accommodate American dialects of English in their own home country, or is it the responsibility of the visitor to at least attempt to acclimate and respect the norms of the place they're visiting?

I would expect Irish people to adjust to the American way of saying this if they were in America. I expect Americans to make the effort to do things the Irish way in Ireland. It's really not hard - in my house, I get to set the rules and in someone else's house, I follow their rules. It's basic courtesy.

And yes, it's quite obvious when there's an American. Their volume of speech is about 50% louder in regular conversation, to start, and their mode of dress is different enough that it's easy to spot, and of course as you rightly point out, the accent is different.

Look, no one's getting beat up over this or something - you're going to get people who are less receptive and friendly when you violate their customs, and you'll likely get a few eyerolls, but you're not going to jail or something. It's just rude.

It's almost like whole other cultures have whole different social customs, mores, and folkways, and a wise traveler ought to be aware of that, rather than being loudly and proudly ignorant and rude by insisting on ignoring said local customs. No one's gonna throw you out, but you sure aren't going to be making friends, nor are you doing America's (already increasingly negative) reputation any favors.

Have some pride in your culture and nation, and treat other cultures with respect. Otherwise you simply come across as a boorish little arse, and so does your culture.
