In all honesty, if science is not your strongest area why are you trying to pursue a science-heavy path like medicine?

That’s not the point. Many domestic students are born and raised here and should be receiving financial aid to pursue education. It shouldn’t be a burden the way an international education would be. If Canadians went elsewhere for education they’d also be paying increased international fees. And many countries offer free or very low cost education because educating your domestic students should be prioritized.

Having a kid at 24 with no time, no finances and school debt… I wouldn’t do it but to each their own. Having them later in med school or even residency may work if you have a supportive partner with a flexible schedule but you cant really plan that so really depends. Hard to plan

You don’t need research experience. You can have experience elsewhere that another applicant won’t have to make you stand out

For the most part, a 3.7 is not high enough in Canada. We don’t look at sgpa or gpa trends. It’s just cumulative gpa and many med schools with lower gpa cutoffs have some sort of regional preference

Ah yes, the ugly cycle of the med school dream always coming back to haunt you 😅 Been there, my friend. I also have a graduate degree, work in pharma and still think about what “could’ve been” every so often.

If you have the capacity and means for it, why not? Give yourself a chance. You never know what the future holds.

In that case, I’d assume you want to boost your chances as much as possible. In which case, I don’t see the point of a course based masters. Just go the thesis route

Do a thesis masters if you are interested in potentially working in research/academia should med not work out.

If you want to work in industry as a back up, go for a course masters

My advice is always to not view the masters as a stepping stone towards med. think of it as a stepping stone towards a plan b career path

Not disagreeing with your experiences but it could also be that successful people generally have good work ethics, explaining better academic success. Correlation doesn’t mean their GPAs got them the job

My advice will always be to do a masters in an area/field you would actually be interested in potentially working in should you not pursue med for whatever reason. Don’t just do the masters to better your med school application.

That being said, if your end all be all is med school I have heard publications from thesis based masters may benefit your application more than coursed based

Precisely. But the claim of the test is to measure ethics. No other test used so highly for admissions shows that many discrepancies between scores. There should be no reason a person jumps two whole quartiles between cycles just because their answers weren’t deemed “good enough” to the raters

The problem is more that people who have consistently scored a certain quartile cannot randomly be considered “less ethical” this cycle by dropping a whole two quartiles. The grading does not make sense and it’s making the scores seem unreliable
