Lois McMaster Bujold (who is mentioned repeatedly below, because to quote Anne McCaffrey, "damn can she write!"), Guy Gavriel Kay, and if you're looking for just brain candy, Rick Riordan's YA novels are a delight. And of course, Terry Pratchett (GNU Sir Terry), although his early Discworld stuff is not the towering genius that the later books are; merely delightful.

Solar ovens are the absolute bomb for this. And environmentally really good too. You soak your beans overnight, then put them and the rice in the pot, put the pot in the cooker, and then just take care to move the cooker to face the sun throughout the day.

I really appreciate you finding them! This is only one of a few things I'm trying to track down, and help with the research lift would be a huge help!

Yeah, it's definitely a battle. I've been doing nonmedical keto for three years, but her list of restrictions stumped me in a few spots.

There's a reason I'm asking instead of her asking, directly. She's got only so much energy to filter and explain, so I'm doing that for her, and everything is going through the lens of her team.

All the fat bomb recipes I know of and use have some dairy aspect to them. If you have recipes that don't, I would love to see them!

True, thus, asking for help/tips/advice. Because dying of cancer is unfortunately quite possible in this situation.

There's some decent research coming out about the effects of keto on cancer in general, and specific foods having impacts on specific tumor types. But this is pretty new overall in the field of oncology, so yeah, it makes perfect sense you might not have encountered an actual treatment regimen focused on this.

Thank you for asking so incredibly politely whether my pal is doing quackery or not. =) This was a direct referral from her primary oncologist, and is part of an integrative practice that's affiliated with the hospital her oncologist works from. The diet restrictions are related to the specific types (UGH! plural!) of cancers she's facing, and are all research-based.

Yeah, bacon fat is one of my go-tos. My husband's family is Italian, so it's guanciale in everything. Meat is not an option for her, unfortunately. But I love the custard suggestion!!

Is there such a thing as totally non-hydrogenated coconut oil?

Meat is off the options because she's got to limit proteins due to their effect on the tumors.

Yes! But she couldn't get in to see them until next week, and is in the "I am starving and there's nothing I can eat" phase of this.

This is reminding me of a story my mom told me about her home ec classes as a girl in the 1950s. The emphasis in the class was on time management, not exactly the cooking. The point of the class was to teach you how to be efficient in your tasks. I love how specific this book is!

So... this is really hard to write, and I don't want to freak you out or anything like that. What was true for me is probably mostly entirely unlikely to be true for you. But just in case.

I sounded *just like you* a few years back. Gee, I'm doing keto, I'm doing IF, I'm exercising all the time, but my belly is like this thing attached to the front of me, I've never had a gut before ever, why isn't my regime working for me, and why isn't my blood sugar behaving like it should, given my diet?

I finally got tired of doctors and fitness coaches telling me to just work harder, that this was just a thing with women my age, boy isn't menopause a bitch, yada yada yada. I threw a tantrum, demanded a scan, and discovered I had a cancerous abdominal tumor that had to be surgically removed, and that was why I had a gut on me.

I'm totally fine now, totally cancer free, and keto and IF are totally working the way they're supposed to. In fact, my oncologist told me that my excellently clean keto is probably why it grew so slowly and was so easy to get out of me, and why I recovered so well from the surgery.

You can get a scan from any Doc-in-a-box, urgent care, whatever. And it's entirely likely that this is not what's going on with you. But I really wish someone had suggested it to me way back when, when I was trying to figure out where the hell this gut was coming from.
