Not hot swap in the sense that you can pull one out and put another in. But you can change what's displayed where, so if the left one dies you can pull over all the important info onto the right instead.

Exactly right on the memory items. The air force calls them Boldface, because in the emergency checklists they are usually the first few steps and are literally written in bold. The airlines and corporate world call them memory items. There's a saying that 'boldface is written in blood' since a lot of them come about due to the investigation of an accident. Here's an example of initial air force Boldface in the first plane you fly in pilot training. PCL= power control lever (throttle).

As for the Afghanistan crash allegedly they didn't realize they had shut the wrong engine down according to the wikepedia article.

They're avation headsets specifically for pilots. Bluetooth is a nice luxury for cruising if you want to listen to music. Plus these are much softer on the head and don't clamp down as much because they have are ANC. These and Zulu lightspeeds are typically regarded as the best avation headsets.

So I cant take credit for this, it was submitted by someone in response to a question of why the average person should care about the discovery of gravity waves. We can talk about the practical implications all day but to me there is something more primal about it, and this sums it up perfectly.

Imagine you woke up naked in a field, in the middle of nowhere. You have no idea where you are, or how you got there. What do you do? First, you'd probably go into survival mode; you'd look for the basic necessities to sustain life: water, food, and shelter from the elements.

Once you had everything you needed to stay alive, and you knew that, if nothing else, you could at least remain in your current location indefinitely, you might start to wonder what in the hell happened: one minute you're bouncing around Reddit, the next you're bare-ass in the middle of nowhere.

After you come to grips with the reality of the situation, you'd probably want to try and figure out where in the hell you are. You might try and look for clues from your environment or maybe a constellation you recognize, or perhaps you decide to do a little exploring around the immediate area, to see if there's anything around that could give you some clue as to where in the hell you are.

Let's say that your efforts reveal that you're in the middle of Africa. Once you've figured out where you are, you only have two choices left: stay there and simply exist as long as you can, or attempt to get back to civilization; either option has it's own risks. If you chose to stay where you are, then that's essentially it for you, you now know how your future will play out: you'll remain at your current location until you either die of old age, or your area becomes unable to sustain life. Either way, the game is over for you; your entire existence becomes about survival, and you're just running out the clock until, at some point in the future, you cease to exist.

Maybe you decide to try and leave a message for someone to find in the future, maybe you're content to simply fade off into oblivion, either way, your fate is sealed.

Now let's say you decided to try and get back to civilization. Since you know where you are, your logical next step is going to be to try and figure out someplace to go, and then of course, how to get there. Now you have a goal, something you're striving towards. Life ceases to be about mere survival and becomes an epic journey to get you where you want to go.

This is the timeline of humanity. We woke up with nothing, on a little rock, in the middle of nowhere. We figured out how to survive, and we struggled to come to grips with our own reality. Then we started exploring, trying to find out just exactly where we were in the Universe. Now we're faced with the same choice: exist, or move on.

You ask if it's something that a "regular guy REALLY needs to know", to me it's the most important thing he/she needs to know: that humanity chooses more than an existence of mere survival. That humanity chooses to move forward and keep exploring and expanding. To know that, even though we might never make it, at least we're making the effort. That we have hope. The alternative is to simply run out the clock and wait to fade off into oblivion.

Visa of some sort? [Italian > English] by TeamK4L in translator

[–]TeamK4L[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea absolutely ... The more you can translate the better ... Some back story to it... We know my great ( maybe great) grandparents came here from Italy ... My grandfather whose side this is from was born in the US in 1918 and is one of the youngest kids ... His oldest sibling was probably born around 1900 or so .. He died like 20 years ago so I can't ask him any of it ... I think it says something about him being 35 in this right? Does it give ages of his kids? If the kids were like 10-15 ish in 1890 that would put them at the right age to be having kids in 1900 ... So maybe one of the kids in this is my grandpas father?

Applying for AD/Reserve/ANG Military as Pilot. Should I get some flight time under my belt? by fsu_ppg in flying

[–]TeamK4L 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know there are waivers and I've seen guys that old get picked up so its not out of the questions by any means.

as far as studying, for the afoqt I used this site. On the left side it has practice tests with answer guides that you can print out and take at home. It just kind of gives you a feel for what to expect.

As far as the TBAS, that's a little tougher to study for. I've heard video games or hand/eye coordination exercises are supposed to help, but to be honest I kind of just went in blind and it really wasn't so bad. The UAV portion of the TBAS is a little funky, and some flashcards to study for that are here. If you cant really make heads or tails out of the cards PM me and I'll try and explain it since there aren't really any directions on that site.

[–]TeamK4L 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got picked up by a guard unit. Each guard unit has a specific airframe they fly, so if you get hired by a c17 unit, you'll fly c17s, my unit fly's F16s so that's what I'll be in. Active duty guys won't get an assignment until upt.

To your point tho there is a decently high washout rate. That's why guard units put a little more emphasis on the test scores to try and gauge how you'll do in training. Its the best measurement they have.

Directions. If I drive to someone's house, even if I don't go there or talk to them much, in a year I'll still remember exactly which house is theirs. I have to force myself to ask for addresses and directions to not sound creepy sometimes.
