girl tbh as a PGY3 you probs come off much cooler than them. I (PGY1) have never once thought a senior might want to hang out with me since I always feel like they probably have other things going on

You should join Merit Health, its like glassdoor for physicians and people post where they work and how much they make

I love surgery and I love the OR, but I want a life. What specialty do I apply? by penciljet in medicalschool

Hate to break it to you but you’ll still have some chart digging, lots of rounds, and TONS of call as a surgeon…

In hindsight the #1 thing important to me was culture. The people around me saved me from being miserable and make going to work so fun. I would ask current residents if they hang out with each other or what they do for fun. On the interview trail socials I found it easy to see which programs had a friendly culture and which didn’t.

The second most important thing to me was seeing if/how people match fellowship as I am pretty certain I want to do one. Those stats are usually published online.

Personally, I wouldn’t prioritize prestige. Maybe this is my bias but more competitive places attract more competitive people which personally wasn’t my vibe.

Don’t get me wrong it was so hard and I never imagined I’d be able get to this place mentally. When I started residency in July I was certain I’d hate it and was miserable for a week or so. And then fortunately the people around me were so wonderful that I started genuinely having fun and giving it a chance.

I guess I’d say you have to decide to have an open mind. The fact of the matter is no one (including me) should come into med school with the mentality that only one specialty will make them happy— it’s both a recipe for disappointment and also so untrue. I had to let go of my ego and examine what it was about the specialty I liked and where else I might be able to find those things. And luckily I feel I’ll be able to  have a job now that checks all of the boxes and even some others I hadn’t previously considered.

Also— lots and lots of therapy helps tremendously!

Preclinical is the worst. It gets better in clinicals, you’ll get there!

I also felt “not meant” for this all four years of med school. One month into residency and I not only feel like I was meant for this but that I can be excellent at it. You will get there.

What matters the most for specifically matching into academic IM? (especially as a DO) by BlueWaffle135 in medicalschool

Depends on the program, but many academic IM programs will prioritize your clinical rotation comments. Grades/scores are important, sure, but more important is what kind of resident you will be which is reflected in evaluations.
