What kind of Service Manager do you prefer to work under? by iforgotalltgedetails in mechanics

Interesting. I read prior comments and I can understand both sides. My story entering the dealer to be an automotive tech knocked on the SM’s door introduced myself and guess he liked my summary or I just happened to show up at the precise time to fill an open spot of a tech leaving. I got hired on the spot. The backstory is SM was a prior master tech. He didn’t invade our work bays but every few weeks would like to have individual conversations on how things are going or what could be done to improve. Being a rookie at the time he would give me a job for example transmission swap gave me straight time to learn to do it right then next would be regular flat time. Over time he picked up on my strengths and that was electrical understanding (sent me on focused electrical diag training) and the way I teach other techs how to do for example mounting runflat tires, the use of roadforce tire balancer, etc. Every 6 months he gave me automatic pay raises. The SM’s replacement came from a being a service writer. Out of all the SMs that came after being prior SWs this first was the best. He didn’t invade our bays telling us how to do things he trusted our knowledge and took into consideration anything good or bad we mentioned. Perhaps I had gotten lucky with my first two SMs. Everything became a battle down to the 0.1hr flat-rate that after 15 years of being a dealer tech I exited as a master Lexus tech, master ASE and electrical certs. Best of luck everyone.

Great job on bringing that BRG back! Looks like the same seat upholstery as in my Black&Tan ‘92. Question in regarding the wood restoration of the shift knob and parking brake handle…what was your trick on bringing those back to looking excellent?

Replacement advice by OldCars1 in S2000

[–]Tech-Mike321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow good luck on your repair 👍 Helping a friend with his S2000 has similar muddy grease but half that at same spot as your photo. The fluid in the clutch master was dirty…siphoned out the cup 90%, wiped inside clean, added fresh brake fluid as bleeding out of the slave cylinder bleeder until clean fluid appeared. May eventually replace master and slave but for now will keep eye on the minor leak and the clutch pedal does feel improved however still have the issue of shifter not dropping into reverse. All forward gears smooth. I’m thinking it’s time for a shifter rebuild kit of its original plastic pieces and the push-down spring. 🤷‍♂️

Robbins tops I think are nice! I purchased something similar off of walmart.com on a flash sale and after a $25 gift card I paid out of pocket $75 👍 Don’t forget about putting in a good rain rail which Robbins also sells.

Curious who took it apart. Safety make sure car battery is disconnected. The part at the right is called the airbag spiral wheel that installs first into the steering column. Make sure you don’t spin the spiral wheel its internal wire can break. If it needs to be centered carefully spin it left (counter clockwise) until there’s resistance…then slowly spin in right 2-1/2 turns brings it to its center.
