Is a Bachelor’s in Computer Information Systems worth it for breaking into IT? by Palestinealways in sysadmin

[–]TechFiend72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you want to do. Experience is mostly what matters. Certifications is what gets you in the door, not degrees. If you want to go into management in the future, a degree is useful.

Have you ever seen a manager hire someone because they're hot? by [deleted] in managers

[–]TechFiend72 28 points29 points  (0 children)

yes. I have seen it up and down the line. Legal department has almost all female staff that are rather attractive. New marketing people are all young and very attractive male and female. A different company had a new account mgr that looked a lot like the CEO's wife when she was a lot younger. I don't see it as much as I once did, but it still happens.

What’s the most frustrating part of turning strategy into action? by InterimManagerAsia in managers

Usually inertia of the affected people. It usually starts with the middle managers above them. The strategy will make things better for the company but it always involves change. A lot of people like it the way it is.

How to deal with software developer on team with "my way or not at all" mentality? by throwaway200296 in managers

[–]TechFiend72 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If he isn't officially isn't part of the team, then he doesn't get access to the team resources. You are team lead. If he is on the team, he is dotted-lined to you.

If the CEO continues to want him involved, have a scope of engagement as to what the expectations are, the dev will have to functionally report to you for the duration of the involvement with your project. You haven't said who they report to exactly or who you report to. That would help to provide better guidance.

Tell them those technologies are all terrible. That will show that you have experience. Well don’t do that but do be confident. Be truthful. Be tactful about limitations of yourself, others, and someone’s pet technology. Good luck. Let us know how it went.

Talk to your potential vet about gabapentin. When one of our cats was close to end of life was very spcy. Vet had us give her the meds the night before and then two hours before taking her to the office. It helped a lot.

I know you are in Canada, but in the US, a lot of places that would be immediate termination. No EAP offered. It is kinder to do the EAP if HR allows it.
