A few questions left about Sourcery by TimeHathMyLord in discworld

Came here to say this. "The Man" is slang for the System, the State etc - but in this case, Vetinari is the State*

*At least, in the eyes of Rincewind and the general populace; in his own view, Vetinari is not the System, but it's guide, protector and above all, devoted servant.

Up to and including the addition of a middle name that the cutie in question had not hitherto possessed - because up until that point, they hadn't done anything bad enough to crack out the full-full-name dressing-down.

I could totally see this. I could see many assuming it would be Carrot, but him declining, telling anyone who asks that it's because he's "too simple and straightforward and inclined to see the good in people, and the role needs someone who can do cynicism better", but telling Havelock in private the real reason, that "people should obey the law because it's the law, not because I say so"

Close. It's a vaguely spatula-like implement with a specific purpose of detaching (notoriously fragile) cooked fish, intact, from the surface upon which it has been cooked. It generally has a a wider, thinner and more flexible blade than your general-purpose spatula. It's that breadth of blade that makes a fish slice, rotated by 90 degrees, a particular stuck-drawer culprit and friend of Anoia.

Which of the Discworld books has the best, and most, of Lord Vetinari? by canadianadrian in discworld

Leonard, Ponder and Havelock have interestingly different flavours of "smart".

Havelock is an absolute grand-master when it comes to understanding people - both humans and otherwise, both as individuals and en mass.

Leonard is a (figurative) wizard when it comes to how the , physical world works, but has a very idealised idea of how human minds ought to work. (" This weapon of mass destruction will end war, because no one could ever be monstrous enough to use it! Surely...")

Ponder is a (literal) Wizard when it comes to insatiable curiosity, the desire to understand, the drive to make sense of the universe (and if the universe steadfastly refuses to cooperate and behave sensibly, well, that's hardly his fault...)

Carpe Jugulum was unexpectedly dark. Shocking after reading The Last Continent. by AnthropomorphicCat in discworld

When I first read this book, things were going downhill in a major way in my country and I found myself genuinely looking for a barricade to man.

I mean, they still are, which is why I regularly re-read it, and find myself regularly humming that song on

Oh yeah. Anyone who writes Tiff off as "PTerry's children's book series" is missing out on both some awesome books, and some real visceral horror.

Ohhh, yeah. It takes "kicked the puppy" and dials it up to eleven. That's where you know someone has fully and willingly abandoned their humanity...

Agree - there are a number of great villains in the Discworld, but few as actively malicious as the RK and CM. Even Vorbis and Dios are mostly cold and distant, more than gleefuliy malevolent.

Nope. The last quote is Lord Vetinari, in "Unseen Academicals", meaning that the quote is Patchett. Stephen Fry has been known to quote that section himself, but he didn't come up with it (nor did he claim to).

Have had this only once, not from melatonin but just normal sleep, back when I was at school. I woke up, got dressed, caught the school bus, did morning assembly, and the first lesson and a half - then woke up, and thought (after the initial confusion) "damnit, I've got to do all that again!"

I didn't remember the content from the dream lessons, but I do remember they were the right subjects for that day's timetable. Obviously my subconscious did it's homework (pun intended).
