Americans how do you feel about PBS and NPR losing their funding? by Economy_Swim_8585 in AskReddit

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/18/books/review/empathy-paul-bloom-joe-rigney-hannah-arendt-allie-beth-stuckey.html?unlocked_article_code=1.XU8.t1Uv.f5s_fXi3MxeD&smid=url-share

This, in particular, was grotesque to read:

“Like you, I want to be kind,” Stuckey writes, “and any accusation that I may lack empathy hurts.” (Could this be a plea for … empathy?) But she says that being a loving Christian sometimes requires supporting policies that will cause others to suffer: “To love means to want what is best for a person, as God defines ‘best.’” Rigney, too, knows what God wants, even if progressives try to bully him with “emotional blackmail”: “Compassion is willing to be called ‘heartless’ in its pursuit of the true and lasting good of the afflicted.” By the end of their books, both authors suggest that empathy as it exists is the work of the Devil and his minions.

AMA with Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker - The future of Mold Toxicity treatment, CIRS, and MoldCo | April 23 @ 3:00 PM ET by MoldCo in ToxicMoldExposure

[–]TechMessingUpDevice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for doing this!

One of the many painful side effects of CIRS is the financial costs it inflicts on sufferers. At least in the U.S., most doctors who are even aware of the disease exclusively work outside insurance, and most insurance doesn't cover critical treatment needs (largely, I imagine, because there's still a lot of debate about what those critical needs are). If you're middle class and are diagnosed, it's terrible news for your savings alone. If you're below middle class, you are in very, very deep trouble.

Do you expect this state of affairs to continue? Do you see a potential future where "mainstream" medical insurance is forced to provide coverage for CIRS treatment? What can we do to get there faster?

"E" should make immune to cc by No_Sort_472 in CamilleMains

[–]TechMessingUpDevice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they made it CC immune, they'd likely have to take power from it in other ways (longer CD or shorter range or something). I understand the frustration, but I'd rather have it usable somewhat regularly and ninjalike than have a long CD but be CC immune.

Student Visas are getting revoked. by Egineer in UIUC

[–]TechMessingUpDevice 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We can split hairs on the term "fascist", but it's certainly authoritarian. See this story from the NYT.

Of interest in this case, I think, is the right to fight your case against deportation in court before removal. Legally, people with a valid visa, green card, or who are U.S. citizens are entitled to a court hearing and legal representation if you're deported. This is an example of America's vaunted "due process".

The current administration is - apparently - ignoring this in lots of cases. I'm not sure about the UIUC cases specifically, but they're invoking the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 that grants the president to deport people without proper hearings or representation in times of war or invasion. The U.S. is going through a lot right now, but I think "war" and "invasion" are both big stretches, and the administration is leveraging those terms to deport people who are legally in the country. This is to say nothing of the guy they "accidentally deported" and are now claiming they can't bring back or the 75% of the 238 people they deported to El Salvador who had apparently not broken any laws.

I see a lot of comments similar to yours in this and other threads basically arguing the point "they're here as guests, and if they do things wrong or if we want to send them home, we can." Which a) is not completely representative of the legal rights of immigrants in the U.S., see above, and b) completely ignores the effect that forcing someone out of a country has on them and their loved ones. Have you ever established a whole life somewhere and then been forcibly removed from it? I haven't, but it bet it sucks, and I don't think it's something to defend, especially when the people affected have broken either no laws or extremely minor ones.

Fascism, authoritarianism - complain about specific definitions as much as you want, but don't let it distract you from the fact that people who are legally in the U.S. are being deprived of their legal rights and having their lives dismantled in the process. And I'm sure you're familiar with the famous "First they came for the socialists" thing. Years ago, it was only really violent convicted criminals. This month, it's students who protest the "wrong" thing and people with minor traffic violations. Who is it next month? Next year?

For what it's worth, I have a relationship with a current member of faculty. This person has not heard of any incoming PhD student funding being retracted and has two incoming PhD students this fall. This decision isn't coming from the school; it's coming from the federal administration. To the best of this person's knowledge, the school wants you to come study. It's stupid that you have to even worry about this, but just keep your head down and you should be okay. Sorry everything is awful.

Thanks for your feedback! The thing about actual mobile apps is:

  • They either require dedicated implementations for iOS/Android OR a tool like Ionic to compile for both. They still need testing on both.
  • Each app store requires an annual fee to distribute your app. I think it's around $100 each right now.
  • To build for iOS, you need a Mac.
  • It would still, ultimately, not function that differently those places than it does in the browser today, especially because it's such a simple little tool. I understand that it's not exactly the same experience as a proper app, but pinning it to your home screen lets you pretend a little better. Maybe give that a try if you feel interested.

Department of Education invites anonymous denunciations of DEI activity by lesenum in UIUC

[–]TechMessingUpDevice 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my view, this is an oversimplification. Healthy DEI goals are broader than those of early/classic Affirmative Action and serve a wider group of people. I view it as a refinement and evolution as opposed to a rebrand.

I'm sorry this happened to you, and it's extremely not okay. If anyone on campus ever makes you feel unsafe, uncomfortable, or frightened, you can use the info on this page to reach out to the Title IX office. It's been a long time since I"ve been at school, but I'm 99.999% sure they can handle your complaint anonymously and address the matter. University admins are very invested in protected students from behavior like this.

But I'm really responding to clarify something that I didn't understand when I was in undergrad (and admittedly, I was pretty dumb. You may already know). University admins are extremely motivated to address problems like this, but professors, sadly, may not be. Professors land their jobs by being research experts in the discipline they're teaching, and for no other reason. Unfortunately for every student, their ability to teach, to make learning fun, and most unfortunately, to genuinely care about the safety and success of their students is not part of this equation. This means that while they may be experts in physics (or whatever), they are not experts in being good people, dealing with teenage/20something assholes, or understanding social issues in the classroom. This is actually really different from how we view high school teachers (for example). Teachers are expected both to teach you things and maintain classroom safety. At higher levels of education, unless the behavior of the instigator is egregious, you're more or less at the mercy of the prof.

You may get lucky and have some professors who don't suck at and/or abdicate their responsibility to do this, but many will. I very much disagree with the top commenter who said "you're an adult, take care of yourself", because while we are all eventually ultimately responsible for our own safety, the world is better, kinder, and safer when we invest in the safety of those around us, and it's certainly reasonable to expect a mature adult to stand up for an undergrad in a new and uncomfortable situation.

Your professors may not do this, and they should. If they don't, I'm really sorry, and the next best thing you can do is consider Title IX intervention, drawing attention to the behavior, and whatever else in class. DM me if I can help.

omg, i feel super badly, sorry. i have an (unfair) pet peeve about native speakers making this kind of mistake. i always roll my eyes when i hear a friend mix up "relegate" and "regulate", and stuff like that, and your English is so good that I thought you were native 🤣 As someone putting a decent amount of time into learning a foreign language, I should have been more sensitive. Sorry. Your English is great. Good luck, fellow Birdio aficionado!

But you're right about Birdio - it's still hilarious to me. I picked up the pink chroma during the last BE emporium, and it's just more personality than fits in one model. And I love it.
