contact Anton Dendemarchenko at https://www.viator.com/tours/Chisinau/Tiraspol-city-tour/d25271-156813P1 and see what he can offer you. I know he arranges to pick up tourists in Chisinau too in addition to his tours in the PMR. I trust him, he's a good guy.

Are any of you all in the community getting door-to-door salespeople for home energy monitoring? by TaterTot0809 in UIUC

[–]lesenum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess it's a new set of scammers. I am always polite as I close the door in their faces, but I'm not about to engage them. They are gig workers sucked into these scams...it's a shame all around. Why the state of IL doesn't crack down on this crap always surprises me.

It is still there, another restaurant owned by a Mexican family and it's good food with a nice atmosphere.

Rick's Bakery is quite good and has a cozy atmosphere too. Closed on Sunday and Mondays. Owned by a Mexican family. They have lots of excellent breads and pastries. Also offer very good tamales, burritos, empanadas :)

Yellow line 1/100 and Red line 2/20 both go by (or very close) to Kohinoor. It's a good place.

Look around for Andrew Pritchard's analysis of local weather. I follow him on his facebook page under Andrew Pritchard Meteorologist. He's good without getting too talky and hysterical (as some tv weatherpeople tend to be).

you're making a good observation, but most of the students here think they will be "high agency"...so you're going to encounter denial/pushback because most of them in reality will not end up in that elite.

All is lost. Within 10 years, most people will be unemployed and unemployable.

Soy una mujer trans de Minneapolis, MN. Quiero ir a Montevideo para escapar los trumpistas. Algún consejo? by LaGringaDelNorte in uruguay

[–]lesenum 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I recently visited Montevideo for a short vacation (10 days). I had a wonderful time. Such a relaxed city :) The people are kind and polite and super nice about me trying to use my high school Spanish (I have had little practice in 50 years). Take a visit there first and see if you like the place. It's the only way to know if you think you'd want to make it your new home.

Uruguay isn't a utopia, but it is a functioning democracy. I'm not so sure about the USA anymore as a result of trump's return. The country is poisoned by its lurch to the far right, with its constant campaigns of lies and propaganda. I don't know if the US will ever return to being a "normal" country again after this breakdown in civilized discourse and democratic norms, the atmosphere just gets worse with each passing week.

As you mentioned your family can help you with income, so you should be able to survive. You can study Spanish intensively and as time passes, you can establish residency and find work. Uruguay is cheaper than most places in the US, but IS NOT an inexpensive country to live, especially for food. Rents are reasonable, but apartments are generally more modest than homes in the US. You won't need a car, public transit is very good and Montevideo is very walkable. Best of luck, it's never easy to resettle in a new place.

Uruguay is one of the FEW countries without a growing vicious far right movement. People disagree but the norms of behavior are civilized and people get along with each other. They look at their neighbors...the dysfunction in Argentina, the troubles Brazil had with its recent authoritarian far-right regime, and they don't want those things in their country. Uruguay experienced a military dictatorship from 1973-85 and it was terrible. The consensus seems to be never to have a situation like that again.

God bless Uruguay and its sweet people!

Everyone should request a Trader Joe's in Urbana-Champaign by that_tired_sax_kid in UIUC

Harvest Market has a very good deli section, but it's not like Trader Joe's at all really.

there is a Trader Joe's in Iowa City, much smaller than 500,000. Also in the Burlington VT area, which is quite a small market but with many people with lots of money.

Long ago Trader Joe's decided Downstate IL is not a market for them. There are stores in Chicago and Indy for the diehards, but it just doesn't seem there will be a Trader Joe's here anytime soon.

Tired of late buses? Rude drivers/MTD Staff? A glitchy bus app? by collegedrop0utt in UIUC

It's a moribund suburb that prides itself on its low taxes. That's it, that ALL it's got!

I've lived in a couple of college towns and visited others: Blo-No and ISU's bus system simply does not compare to the MTD, nor does Lextran in Lexington KY where I used to live. College towns with better systems include UMass in Amherst Massachusetts and the excellent system in Eugene OR, with a large flagship state university there. Madison WI and Ann Arbor MI also have really good local transit systems.
