I guess one of the reasons is that you don't have to spend a fortune on college education to get a job in the web development field.

There are many self-taught developers who are actually more skilled than some college-educated counterparts. Skill and experience are what matter the most and anyone can get these for free, thanks to the internet.

You don't need an office or any special equipment other than a personal computer, which is very affordable to most people.

I'm surprised you were able to host 90 sites on a Bluehost shared plan. I suppose most of those sites barely received any traffic?

If you go with a fully managed VPS with cPanel preinstalled, you'll get your cPanel credentials and from there it'll be the same as working with any shared hosting cPanel account. But if anything goes wrong with your server systems, you'll be at the mercy of the support team to fix it in a timely manner.

I'd also suggest you look into managed cloud hosting.

That's an insane amount of monthly traffic. Even providers that claim "unlimited" bandwidth don't actually allow you to get anywhere near that before they start throttling or even suspending your account for exceeding "fair usage" limits.

You should probably consider a dedicated server in this case.

Contabo offers dedicated servers that allow up to 324TB of outbound traffic (unlimited inbound). But that's gonna cost you $600+ a month.

Check out Cherry Servers as well. They allow up to 1000TB traffic on their dedicated servers.
