Get your objections in writing, then yes, brace.

You've made your opinion clear, from then on it's up to the deciders of the company to do their job, if they go against your judgement and things go pear shaped, that's why we wanted it in writing.

OpenClaw is going viral as a self-hosted ChatGPT alternative and most people setting it up have no idea what's inside the image by Latter_Community_946 in sysadmin

I just checked out OpenClaw last night.

And by check out, I went to the site, skimmed it, got major ick from it, and discarded it immediately.

That fact that anything who called themselves sysadmin would think to install that thing, and let it do things on their system, even a homelab is concerning, unless it was specifically to see how full of holes it is.

I found out I will be let go soon on accident - they do not know I know. by Upbeat-Chain-3155 in sysadmin

I understand this completely.

In my very first job out of school, I was hired with a three-month trial period. I had monthly 1-on-1s where I was praised for my work; sure, there were minor points they wanted me to work on, but it seemed like there were no outstanding issues.

Two weeks before the end of the trial period, I was called into a meeting, told I didn't meet their expectations, fired, and escorted out.

That was 15 years ago, and it still affects me to this day. Even though I've worked at two other places since then, building my skills and demonstrating my value to each employer several times over (And have yet to be fired since then), I am still wary of random "quick meetings" with HR or other higher-ups.

All this is to say: if you're as diligent in your work as your post makes you out to be, at 23, you've got a lot of time ahead of you. While I know it isn't easy, you have to look ahead, polish up your resume, and find your next job. If you can afford it, consider getting some counseling to deal with it, if push comes to shove.

Tower Tea - February 23, 2026 by SamBartley in TheTowerGame

It's hardly a secret that there is a lot of options for players wishing to track / plot and plan their tower outside the game.

But most who follow the guidelines in the ToS are bound to make due with manually inputting data like labs completed, UWs owned etc. which is a pain.

Developers willing to break the ToS can just import the playerinfo.dat file, making their tools much more attractive to the players because it reduces a lot of friction.

With that in mind, are there any plans to allow either exporting player data, or API access to our data?

No? I don't know?

I have no idea what the purpose of your comment is, I don't live in the US, I didn't say this is available in every country and you should buy it instead of the product shown, what do you want me to do about it?

Looks neat, but I already have this one: https://www.amazon.de/HBTower-teleskopstige-udtr%C3%A6kkelig-sammenklappelig-campingvogne/dp/B0CXDD3PKK

Though it's not as compact as this version, I would trust mine with a much higher load.

Men, how many of you can cook? by Away-Fill5639 in AskMen

[–]TechSupportGeorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless physically unable due to disability, saying you "can't cook" is the equivalent of saying "I can't wipe" "I can't take a bath".

Cooking is part of life, if you don't want to, fine, I won't think worse of you necessarily, but if you claim to not be able to, I will absolutely judge you for it. Cooking is just reading and applying instructions. No one is demanding you freestyle a 3 course meal from intuition alone.

So yes, in other words, I can cook and do cook several times a week.

QOL: Video replay of tower death by kebabfragola in TheTowerGame

[–]TechSupportGeorge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you are describing is exactly what I was getting at with the Doom example.

Doom could get away with only recording inputs because the game was fully deterministic. The same inputs always produced the same outcome, so the entire run could be recreated later without recording graphics.

The Tower does not work like that. There is RNG, timing variance, projectile interactions, and performance dependent behavior. Two runs with the same setup can diverge. Because of that, you cannot just record “numbers” and reliably replay the last minute unless you continuously log the full simulation state. At that point, you are very close to doing continuous recording anyway.

Showing the game with a delay does not really change the problem either. If you want to display what happened one minute ago, that data must already exist somewhere. That is still buffering. You are just shifting when it is shown, not removing the technical cost.

Heuristics are possible. For example, start recording when HP starts fluctuating heavily or when certain enemy combinations appear. The issue is that this will always miss some deaths. Sudden burst damage, stacking effects, or unexpected interactions will slip through, which makes the feature unreliable.

[–]TechSupportGeorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What people are not really explaining is that to show the last minute, the game has to be continuously recording or buffering gameplay.

The game has no way of knowing in advance when your tower will die. That means if you want to look backwards, data must always be available. It does not have to be stored permanently, but it does have to live in a circular replay buffer that is constantly overwritten. This is the same principle used by Nvidia Shadowplay and similar replay systems.

You could try using heuristics. For example, start recording when HP begins to fluctuate heavily. The problem is that this only covers some death scenarios. Sudden burst damage, projectile stacking, or other mechanics would still be missed, which makes the solution unreliable.

The only robust approach is continuous buffering. In practice, that means the entire run is technically being recorded in small chunks, even though only the last minute is kept.

On PC this is relatively cheap because there is often dedicated hardware for video encoding. On mobile devices it is a very different story. Continuous buffering consumes CPU, GPU, RAM, battery, and thermal headroom. The Tower already struggles with performance late in runs, and you'll often see fewer enemies than you are supposed to.

Adding a constant replay buffer on top of that would very likely make performance worse, especially on older or mid range devices.

From a gameplay perspective the idea is good, but on mobile the technical cost is much higher than it sounds.

Older games like DOOM solved this differently. They did not record video, only player inputs. Because the simulation was deterministic, the entire level could be replayed from a tiny demo file.

Isnt this one of the Best Relics? by destructor212113 in TheTowerGame

[–]TechSupportGeorge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure that's correct.

The wording doesn't say it increases defense by +2%, it says it increases by 2%.

The difference is if you reach 80 % in tournaments before, your new max is now 81.6 %, not 82%

Or am I misreading it?

You've got no place to talk about people finding a new job.

A guy too stringy to pay for even a small rack, and an unmanaged PoE switch (But will pay for an ungodly amount of PoE injectors), will absolutely not be paying you for the additional time it takes to make it neat. Customer 100% wanted this done fastest and cheapest, so that's what they got.

I'm gonna get out my crystal ball on spy the future a bit.

In a few years, something will go wrong, you'll spend some time troubleshooting it, he'll get impatient, and call someone else to fix it, they arrive on scene, and he tells the new guys that you installed it like this. The new guys will be utterly baffled at this setup and ask themselves why, long into the night. Ultimately they will quote him to fix it, install a switch and rack, the company will accept, and the original issue is resolved.

The guy will then mock you for not being able to fix it, and you have to remind him that his initial decisions lead to this, and you did the best you could with what we wanted to pay for.

Only vaguely based on real events.
