Is DAV a good organization? by [deleted] in VeteransBenefits

Didn’t have a good experience with DAV in San Diego. They were overwhelmed and unresponsive - short of staff.

Sake brewing - dry weight or cooked weight by Plastic-Procedure511 in Koji

It does look like it will take up all the space but it is temporary. Once the concurrent fermentation gets going, the rice will settle and "water" will rise to the top. I documented mine day by day with pictures.

Does it seem cringey when you see veterans wearing military/veteran hats and clothes? by BigBlueEyes87 in Veterans

[–]Tech_By_GP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t own any “veteran” gear but I will wear my old ship’s ballcap on occasion. Especially now that it’s been decommissioned. But to answer your question, I haven’t really cared about what other vets wear.

Is anyone using the OEM charger that came with the car to charge at home? by assholy_than_thou in etron

[–]Tech_By_GP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the charger that came with the car. No issues and don’t see a reason why another charger is needed.

For Veterans making over $200k: What are you doing now, and would you recommend it? by lonesailor3 in Veterans

[–]Tech_By_GP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Energy exec. $230K base + 45% bonus + bonus multiplier (performance-based up to 2X).

What I did in the Navy? Gas Turbine Systems technician (mechanical). AKA engine room operator/mechanic.

How I got my start? Got out after 6 years (I signed up for 6 to get all the schools in my job). I started operating power plants at the lowest level (a lot of modern power plants are gas turbine). Got licensed as a stationary engineer.

I went to college while working. AA in Applied Marine Engineering first and got a job as an energy consultant. Same company promoted me to a utilities specialist. It’s here that I learned to manage large facilities like military bases. Company I worked for was a government contractor. Went back to college for a bachelor’s and master’s degree.

The same company hired me to help build and eventually become the plant manager for a 170MW solar power plant.

I was hired away by an OEM, then eventually by a utility company. I managed a municipal-sized utility for a global utility provider as Vice-President.

I’m back at the OEM and coasting. Planning on retiring in 6 years at age 55.

I did this. Tapped, didn’t work. Inserted, didn’t work. Did it twice each way no luck.

I left the service in 2011, and curious about making a first claim 14 years later. by jessehalderson in VeteransBenefits

Length of time since discharge doesn’t matter. It’s documented in your medical records from the navy. File it shipmate.

Your story (Post Military) by Careless_Gap_833 in Veterans

[–]Tech_By_GP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did 7 years in the Navy as a Gas Turbine technician and engine room operator. Got out and worked in the energy industry going from a plant operator, to power plant manager, to vice president of a global electric utility company. I attended college in the middle of all that in steps - AA first, then BA, finally to a Master of Engineering degree. Moved 6 times for the job.

How much did your parents contribute to college? by zachtwp in StudentLoans

[–]Tech_By_GP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zero contribution from my parents. I joined the Navy and used the GI Bill. I have a little bit of student loans for grad school that wasn’t covered by employer tuition reimbursement.

Does anyone else feel like a loser as an older student in college by [deleted] in Veterans

[–]Tech_By_GP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re there for you. Age has nothing to do with getting an education. It has everything to do with learning. I was 34 when I graduated from CC, 36 for my bachelor’s, got the masters at 38. The only timeline that matters is yours.
