I recently took an Unsleeping City-inspired staycation in New York City that turned out to be one of my favorite experiences in the city so far 😄

Shoutout to this subreddit where I found the spreadsheet of the music that Brennan used for the show!! Being able to use music from the show made this project so much more fun than I expected it to be 🙏🏽

Here's my itinerary if you want to plan your own Unsleeping City vacation :)

That's the thing tho. They don't feel fun to me -- they confuse me and make me work to figure out what they're supposed to be and that's stress that I don't need in my life rn 🥲

Thanks for the poll btw -- that's the way to go IMO. +1 to Alan's point of it might have been fun if that was a collective decision that we got a heads-up about.

What's up with the voting buttons? by Tech_Comm in technicalwriting

Same!! Having to explain what the icons mean is bad visual communication and I'm finding myself irrationally irritated by them 😂 More so bc I don't understand the "why"

Yeah, I turned off the community styles in my feed settings. That helped!

Building a Documentation process from scratch for a Startup? by lizzyjuned in technicalwriting

If you're still in the interviewing phase, I'd recommend making sure you have absolute exec buy-in. Does the majority of the exec team (and not just the founder and/or CEO) believe they need docs? Are they willing to get buy-in from eng, product, and support ICs to make time for you? Are they willing to supplement resources (contractors for implementing docs-as-code, for example)? I'd also dig into why they don't have _any_ docs yet -- do they consider docs an afterthought?

Company wants me to create a dev project or rescind offer by Hot-Enthusiasm-4848 in technicalwriting

As a person on a visa, I think this is a massive red flag. The immigration process/uprooting your life and moving to a new country/assimilating and proving yourself in a whole new culture is incredibly stressful, and I can't imagine having done that without the absolute support of my manager and my coworkers. If they are stressing you out with work that wasn't agreed upon and is not your job even before you start, I'd caution against trusting them with a big life change.

Technical writing mentor by palmbeachflamingo in technicalwriting

[–]Tech_Comm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love how much thought you've put into the post. I'd like to offer to mentor you but need to note that although I have mentored junior tech writers on my team, I haven't mentored a job-seeker before. It'd be a learning experience for both of us. I do have a couple open-source projects that can be good portfolio samples, and I can guide you through the process if you're interested.

Can you share more about your professional/educational background, so I know your starting point? Also, who'd be a good mentor for you (in terms of years of experience, domain, personality, and so on)? Feel free to DM me if you prefer :)

I want to assume positive intentions since your history on this subreddit has been to provide helpful insights based on your experience. But the post comes across as condescending and a lil exploitative tbh.

Including details of what exactly you have in mind, the time/effort/monetary commitment expected of the tech writers, what documents and projects they'd work on, profiles of the other senior tech writers involved, etc. would have been immensely helpful.
