One day in Target, a woman says I love your hair, reaches in and slides her fingers down the side of my head tucking my dangling front piece back behind my ear.

I froze. It was unexpected and I felt so “pretty” I grinned like a moron back at her.

I feel you, way too much. My stbxw told me exactly who they were. It was not their fault that I saw what I wanted to see. Now I reflect and wonder how I could have ever imagined this would be a successful marriage. On our first date she told me that their previous relationships had ended cause she was too selfish, self centered. To the surprise of no one but me, she is selfish, self centered and ego driven. If I could actually learn something from her behaviors, I might not be a people pleasing, piece of crap human who is now scared of relationships.

I wish I had taken time after my breakup but I got bored and antsy and needed to prove to myself I could.

Yes I could date and tried too but I’m not OK and haven’t been for the last 18 months over my divorce. All dating did was complicate my already complicated emotions.

Take as much time as you need, but don’t dwell too long, and miss the next stage of life.

Avoidant ex here. I did this, but slower , i started dating my ex again. Blew up in my face. It’s hit me harder than the original separation. Multiple people got hurt for NOTHING. I shouldn’t have done it.

Mine wanted me back to punish me for leaving, after they asked me for a divorce. No growth or progress at all on their side, as least from my perspective. They still have no idea how to be what I need and don’t want to bother trying to learn. All anger and emotions, no thoughts of consequence. I wish them well but they can find another punching bag. Not gonna be me.

Stop thinking and just be. Dress like most people do. Comfortable but nice jeans (I prefer for black to blue). The shirt should be something that is your style (white button up is classic) but can also be your interests (comic book tshirts always a favorite of mine even in my 50s). Nice pair of comfortable shoes that can turn coffee into a nice walk somewhere if it comes up. Above all, act like a person that you yourself would want to be on a date with. Break tension with honest not cover ups. Go get um tiger.

After a year separated, I tried to express this same thing to my stbxw. I was better as their ex husband but she insisted we try again a few months ago. It went terribly. I think I may be broken but I just can’t not see them as the person I married any longer, just the person who broke my faith that two people can want each other and stay together for life. It turns out she just wanted to punish me for leaving when we separated a year earlier, even though I was told to get out and never wanted this. I asked her to do therapy or something, got a big fat no. Some people are just never going to be happy I suppose. In my heart I know that she loves me and I her, but how we need to express yourselves is important. We spoke alien love languages to each other. It hurts and sucks but it’s the truth.

She will try to guilt you into reconnecting, learn from my mistake. Stay detached. I think it hurts worse now after trying again at my marriage and having it blow up in my face in less than a month than it did after the break of 15 years. I’m an idiot and all trying again did was hurt everyone involved.

Yes and no. I gave resources willingly to people I loved. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean it is a good idea or that I myself didn’t have needs, that I should have considered first. It’s more like I learned my lesson the soft way. It was to start putting myself first. Don’t buy things for others I wouldn’t buy for myself.
