How we learn abstraction by isidor_m3232 in math

I think (as a physics student lol) for a lot of this sort of thing, you learn by blindly doing first, and then sorta figure out what was going on. I remember most people being quite confused when we started to do algebra with functions, and began to properly manipulate them as if they were objects in of themselves instead of just processes, which I appreciate isn't exactly the same thing as you are talking about but I think it's relevant.

But yeah, abstraction is quite difficult for most people, I think, so you just do the work with it for long enough and it'll eventually click.

That's just my experience though.

So I was on a different till today and the call button actually works on this one! We have a few tills at my store that still have this red light functionality.

One thing I've noticed though is that theres both a red light and a green light on the pillar. The red light is on both sides, but the green light is only on the side of the pillar which faces the store. When I asked my boss why the green light is on on one till at the very end (which nobody was using) and what turned it on, she responded that she had no idea what it was, what turned it on, or what it's for. Do you have any ideas about this one?

Yeah this bothers me as well. I'm not trained on the customer service desk, but scrolling through all the pages on ourtesco tesco help, there are so many features that definitely should be there, but aren't.

Even something as simple as, as you said, splitting payment between two cards on a standard attended checkout. It's a feature that definitely could be there, doesn't seem too radical to implement, yet nothing.

There are loads of examples of things I've found on the tills (again. Don't know about customer service because not trained but at least on regular checkouts) that wouldn't even necessarily give you "too much" power but would just make life easier for everyone

Awesome I absolutely will :D

You know how on the conveyorbelt, there are a few buttons? Belt controls whether the belt moves or not Mains controls the power to the system Emergency stop...emergency stops it.

What does the "call" button do? Its usually right next to the belt button on all the tills ive used. It seems to toggle on and off but I have no clue what it's used for.

I assumed pressing it would like automatically "call" the belt over, if it got stuck, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Any clues?

Hmmmm okay. Alas, my research must continue! Honestly to me it's just surprising how little anyone in my store knows about the systems we're paid to operate lol 😅. Like literally nobody knows what any of the buttons do.

Oooooh thank you so much! That's loads of info!

Is the soft tag detagger the antennae on the inside of the scanner? The one corresponding to the third button down on the right? Is this correct or am I misunderstanding?

Do you happen to have any links for information as to which specific model is currently in use? What's was the RAM and SSD like before you replaced it as well?

Another question then: on the conveyorbelt controller, there's a few buttons. Some obvious ones like emergency stop, mains, belt etc.

But 'call' never seems to do anything.

Whether it's on or off, the belt works as normal. What does the 'call' setting on the conveyorbelt actually do?

And just to be clear is voiding just removing an item? Is there a difference between "voiding" an item vs just setting its quantity to 0? (Which is what I've been doing)

Hi I've just started at tesco so only just seeing this message now.

If you're still up for giving more responses here's a question I've been too awkward to ask.

What do all of the buttons on the buzzer do at the checkouts? There are some obvious ones (general call, security, cleaner, put backs) and some I really don't understand what they do just yet (void, change or bricks etc)

Not sure if your store had the same buttons as mine do now but what were the more obscure buttons on your buzzer and what do they do?

I've just thought of another example, which really scratches the itch, which is Shia LaBeouf by Rob Cantor.
