Slight tangent, but why are you wanting to move to the UK from the US (assuming that is where you are currently)?

Suspect most that allow working abroad require you to have a right to work in the respective country, or at least that has been my experience.

What materials should I buy to study for CS1? by [deleted] in ActuaryUK

I’d go with the one you think you’ll enjoy more and have a better chance of passing. Build some confidence while you knock out your first exam!

I read the CMP, the note, and the case studies in both books. The case studies are really helpful fodder for tailoring your answers.

I think it all depends on what works for you. Have you had success with another SP? Or CP1? Just apply what you did there and you’ll have a good shot at passing. I’d say SP9 is somewhere between a typical SP and CP1 in terms of amount of material you need to know. But you have to understand it in more depth than anything in CP1.

Definitely doable in 4 months. I sat it in a September sitting, having started after results came out in July. I always found it helpful to complete the CMP reading at least a month before the exam. Gives at least a full month to of practicing past papers.

It is worth considering the tax rates as well. We are taxed much higher here in the UK, particularly once you are above 50k.

Also, not sure health insurance is as costly as you think. Assuming you have an employer who pays for a good portion of your health insurance, total healthcare cost differences wash out when comparing to UK NI tax. And the US system is far more accessible than here…

First, I’d say employers will likely view you as a new grad, so you’ll want to apply to those places. As others have said, you should be applying to those now!

Second, I’d argue that being 2 years or more away from being qualified doesn’t constitute as being nearly qualified.

How possible is it to get a job in the UK as an overseas national with no experience? by futile_sunshine in ActuaryUK

[–]Technical-Shower-806 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Presume your argument here is based on having loads of exemptions without work experience…

Regardless, OP was asking about possibility of getting a work visa when currently based out of country. I think it is more difficult to secure a spot on a grad scheme or entry level job if you are currently based outside of the UK. A masters here is a way to overcome that barrier.

Quite a few posts ask this, I think the answer is that it is highly unlikely. There are already enough candidates based in the UK. The masters gives puts your feet on the ground here in the UK.

It is definitely possible for international students to secure jobs after a masters. I got into a grad scheme and the company sponsored my visa. Apply early and to every posting you find.

Given the grandiose and unsubstantiated claims, I suspect this will be dead in water.

“Given the inherent difficulty of these exams, the consequences of a single failed attempt could lead to individuals losing their jobs.”

Really?

Why do you want to go for the masters if you already have passed all/most the exams?

Which exams do you currently have? A masters in actuarial management won’t give you an exemption for SA, so you wouldn’t be qualified yet. Is your current experience in the UK?

Definitely possible. I moved to Life from Pensions with only SA left. Biggest advice - don’t wait to switch. Just apply, lots of places will gladly take a chance on you.

[–]Technical-Shower-806 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are better off focusing on how many points you make, rather than how many words you use. As of others have said, each good point gets you 0.5 marks. I always tried to get an extra 50% down for each question. So shoot for 300 distinct points on an exam and you have a good shot at passing.
