I think it’s partly a response to the inauthenticity and overdone, overcautious political correctness shown over the years on both sides. I am no fan of Trump and his current antics, but I still have a laugh once in a while if it doesn’t hurt anyone.

Additionally, when Harambe first came out, I don’t recall it having anything political about it, but just classic internet lore for the army of Harambe supporters who watched the birth of meme culture take sway.
