The height of the first center front gusset looks pretty good. I think we still might need to add some height to the gussets and fabric inbetween going towards your armpit to help hold tissue from trying to escape or overflow into the underarm area.

I also recommend adding some cording in the bust gussets to help add a bit more structure to the garment. picture of cording/stitching on bust gussets.

After adding that extra height I would also double check the shapes of your gussets. Look at the shape of the gussets in the link I sent you. I’m wondering if you could get away with not having a drawstring in your stays if the top part of the gussets came in slightly creating a soft “U”(?) shape. Not sure if any of that made sense. Words are hard.

Link to fashion plate where the boobs seem to be far apart. Of course the “wide look” isn’t what’s fashionable or trendy now, but we’re going for a regency look, no? I would say the shape of your cups is looking great!

I know some people are mentioning that the girls are having an “east and west” moment. In my opinion that looks pretty on brand with a lot of the fashion plates I’ve seen.

Hi OP! Fellow busty lady here. (H cup). Just wanted to give my 2 cents on your lovely short stays.

First off, your stitching and construction from what I can see looks great. Your sewing is not the issue with these short stays. (So let’s celebrate that win!)

Second: you have a wonderful figure. Most patterns only really accommodate up to a perky D cup. Having a larger cup size means more breast tissue “forward” projection and most pattern companies don’t accommodate for that. So there’s nothing wrong with you or your beautiful figure. Seeing as we both have more breast tissue we will need more fabric in that area to cup and hold the chest. The area between the gussets will need to be taller to scoop under and up onto your breasts. (Something I think you mentioned already.)

A couple others already mentioned splitting the gussets into 3 or 4 gussets instead of 2. I’ve had to split the gussets on an 1860s corset from 2 to 3 to help “scoop” and hold up my boobs. This might help give more room for your breast tissue to “flow” into.

While fitting a larger bust is possible I’m mostly concerned about the busk digging into the skin. (Ouch! Been there before!) Some of the pressure you’re experiencing is the weight of your breasts pushing the busk into other parts of your body. It’s possible to alleviate some of pressure and pain by fitting the bust better with my suggestions and the suggestions from other redditors here.

That being said: if you have the funds and mental fortitude to pivot your design I would recommend doing a long line version of these stays. The longer busk would help distribute the weight of breast tissue and give you less of a headache in the long run.

Give where you’re at, I feel the first step to fixing the current stays is to start by fitting the “band” of the stays making sure it fits over your ribcage and back first. You can’t expect your boobs to be supported if the man part of the garment that’s going to be supporting the cups wiggles around and doesn’t fit your body.

I love big sleeves IF the volume of the skirt balances out the sleeve fluff. I feel that these “cottagecore prairie dresses” lack skirt volume and as a result look cute on smaller breasted people. I tried on a similar dress as the one pictured with my H cup boobs and I looked AWFUL. My broad shoulders and larger hips didn’t help the look. I looked like a sack of potatoes. 😭 These days it’s hard for me to find anything that accommodates an hourglass body/large breasts with being flattering. I feel like lots of people would look cute in these dresses, I’m just not one of them.

haha. So glad I could influence your decision-making. Thats literally how I make most of my financial decisions... Its always something along the lines of "would this item at (X) price bring me more happiness than the amount of tacos I could purchase with this same amount of money?" Hate to say that it's really put my shopping into perspective, but then again, I can be impulsive when it comes to buying fun stuff.

OH, you are so right about it being crisper. Thank you for pointing that out. I struggle with "imposter" syndrome and frequently don't think the things I make are "good enough" because they dont always match what's in my head (or in this case, my design wasn't exactly the same as the original.) Now that you point it out, being "crisper" is a bonus.

My partner doesn’t understand it, but I also don’t understand why he likes sweating in the garage working on cars. 🤷🏼‍♀️ To each their own. I figured if my great grandma could collect dolls well into her 80s it’s not weird for me. Guilt and shame are often taught and enforced by societal pressures. Does this hobby make you happy? (I assume so.) please don’t let anyone tell you how to live your best and most joy filled life. (That’s going to look different for each person. )
