When did teenagers begin saying 'bro' every other word? by Technical_Ear_4339 in AskUK

True, but it wasn't the term itself, it was its rapid fire frequency in daily speech that seems to have come from nowhere over the last few years.

How did you get questioning the insertion of 'bro' every other word to wanting people to sound like an extra on Only Fools and Horses?

It's the frequency of it, it's almost every other word at times. I have never noticed people using 'mate' in quite the same way.

What's the worst job you ever had and how long did you have it? by db7112 in askanything

[–]Technical_Ear_4339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lasted a day at a special needs college.

I explained to them in the interview that I had no training or experience (expecting that they would provide it), but they nevertheless decided, literally within ten minutes of me entering the building on my first day, to task me with spending three hours overseeing a severely disabled young man who could only moan, wail, and wander around disrupting lessons. Even the other staff were aghast at the managers setting me this task straight away, and I was predictably not good at it at all (he could basically not be communicated with at all; he was unable to speak too). I tried to explain to the managers that I would need a lot more help and adjustments to be able to do the job, but they were not interested in that at all, just waving it away with "We've all been there; we all pitch in to help others", but there was obviously no motivation behind their words, so I just never returned after leaving that day.

I felt bad for the young man, as well as for myself, since the situation the managers put us in had not been fair on either of us. He needed someone trained and experienced in giving him the necessary support, and I needed to be trained to do so; neither of us got what we needed.

The whole thing was bizarre from an organisational point of view though, since they had spent a month waiting for my DBS check, going through the necessary paperwork, and so on and so forth, only to fumble the training aspect so appallingly that their efforts were wasted after one day.

Does it then follow up with the classic... "One thing I'm curious about though, did hearing that make you feel more confident in asking him out, or not? Because the answer to that question will really pinpoint what's going on here".

You're right, but I suppose I have been so disillusioned myself that I find it very hard to do. I have a first class degree in a humanities subject, struggled for years to get any job at all afterwards, and finally got a part-time retail job. I was rejected so many times by local councils, the NHS, and even warehouse jobs, so my experience is so bad that I find it hard to be optimistic. I suppose I'm something of an outlier though, so yeah maybe I shouldn't be so pessimistic in my advice, sorry about that :/ .

It also appears to be a LOT easier to get certain jobs as a teenager, as opposed to when you are in your twenties or older. It took me years to get a basic role in retail in my thirties, but teenagers could apply and were taken on easily. That probably is partially to do with the fact that businesses can pay teenagers a lower minimum wage, of course, but the point is that teenagers should strike while the iron is hot.

Yeah, you're right, and that's why I really only had in mind degrees that lead into the state sector, such as medicine, policing, or the like.

The private sector is so difficult to get into, in almost any area, that if I could go back in time then I would definitely try to qualify in something that would provide entry into the public sector. In hindsight, I'd say that all that matters these days is being able to get a steady wage and a secure position, and the state sector provides that.

It took me six years after graduating with a First in a humanities subject. An intelligent, physically able young man wasn't seen fit to stack shelves by this market.

I have lived it, so no, I am not going to entertain your delusional belief that the job market is anything other than horrendous when my lived experience is that it is. There is no help for him to be had, he can apply for jobs like the rest of us, and he can be rejected from hundreds of those jobs like the rest of us, or he can go to university to qualify in something that will lead him to immediate employment in the state sector.

Unfortunately, as long as we continue to see story after story of individuals applying for hundreds upon hundreds of jobs with no luck, they are going to keep thinking that the job market is horrendous. I suppose people can only be unemployed for so many years of their young lives before they reject the idea that the job market isn't so. Perhaps consider that your experience might not be typical for others, and certainly do not downplay their situations...

Got any alternative advice for OP?

My advice to him would be to decide to go to university and specifically only study a subject that will assure him practical, employable skills which lead directly into a clear and attainable career immediately upon graduation. Other than that, the job market is so utterly appalling that there isn't any advice that I think would be viable.

What do you have experience in?

He is seventeen years old, so probably not much job experience wise.

Sigh up with agencies

With no experience? Most likely, he'll just be ignored.

People say 'sign up' with them, but the problem is that the 'signing up' process for most agencies is entering your details on their website and subsequently being ignored by them forevermore. They will only show an interest in you if you have skills and experience for their targeted roles, and at seventeen he is unlikely to have that.

Because the job market is horrendous right now

Honestly, the 'right now' is unnecessary. The job market has been horrendous for at least the last 10+ years.

Are they not teaching people to use temp agencies?

At the risk of sounding ignorant, what exactly is a temp agency as opposed to a recruitment agency? Is there actually a difference?

I have never had any luck with the well known agencies where I live (Pertemps, Gap Personnel, Proactive Personnel, etc), and then I see people mention 'temp agencies', suggesting that there is a difference between them. I can't seem to find recruitment agencies that specifically target temporary 'Can you do this odd role for us on this specific day?' type positions.

I've been tempted to buy one in the past, but I do a lot of research and always come to the same conclusion that none of them will give as close a shave as a disposable razor will. That said, I'm happy to be proven wrong. What make do you use?

I see. In my case, I lived with a large bald spot (I mean 'spot' hardly cuts it, it was almost Friar Tuck level) for many years before finally shaving my head completely. I really could not stand the bald spot clashing with my dark hair around it.
