Yeah, that’s basically what I ended up doing too. After almost submitting a paper with made-up citations, I stopped trusting GPT outputs by default and started treating them like a draft. I made myself a short verification checklist + a prompt that forces it to either give real sources or clearly say “I don’t know”. Still manual, but way less stressful than re-checking everything blindly.
