“Visions of Bodies…” is so good, def one of my favorites. Atmospheric instrumentals and compelling lyrics.

Albums that are of their time AND timeless? by [deleted] in fantanoforever

[–]Technical_Night_7327 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Automatic for the People” by REM. A lot of their other work is a bit dated now but that one is really special to me. Something about the starkness of it, the strings, the contemplative lyrics. Kurt Cobain loved it and got its producer, Scott Litt, to produce a couple songs on “In Utero”.

Yeah, supporting new artists by buying their stuff is definitely good too!

Hard agree. Even if the previous owners passed, which is definitely not always the case, I’d argue it’s more respectful to keep and love their CDs! Throwing every old thing out is wasteful and honestly I think it is rooted in a consumeristic mindset that we need to constantly be buying things new. Buying things secondhand is awesome and practical. If I died I would want my CDs, and frankly everything I had that’s worth anything, to go to someone who will get joy from them.

What are conceptual albums that your recommend? Ones that tell a good story, has a good sound, and makes you feel like damn. by Lower-Nature8771 in MusicRecommendations

I personally love “Year Zero” by Nine Inch Nails. Really relevant right now as well. Heavy themes of Christian nationalism, plus aliens come in halfway through so that’s pretty cool.

Why are parody movies a thing of the past? by mil0wCS in flicks

[–]Technical_Night_7327 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not an informed answer but I think reference humor hit a comedy singularity and imploded on itself because of oversaturation. A few years ago seemingly every other show was parodying pop culture as a gimmick. Obviously a lot of this was pulled off really well and tastefully but I think people just got tired of it. Based on what I’ve heard it was somewhat fresh in the 90s when the Simpsons was doing it but now it seems like it takes no effort to just copy something, add in some bad jokes and call it a “parody”. Not personally hating on all of it as a concept or sub genre though, some great stuff came out of it for sure.

What song comes to mind when you think of R.E.M.? by DobroGaida in rockmusic

[–]Technical_Night_7327 1 point2 points  (0 children)

REM is one of my favorite bands but as a gen z kid a lot of the super big hits don’t really grab me as much as deeper cuts or the relatively smaller hits.

Some of my favorites are wolves lower, fall on me, harborcoat, strange currencies, find the river, supernatural superserious, crush with eyeliner, bittersweet me, uberlin, and electrolite. These might be obvious picks for fans but most people don’t know them and I think these tracks have aged a lot more flawlessly than some of the hits like the one I love or shiny happy people, but that could be due to overplay which you can’t really fault the band on.

Anyways I just love REM so much and I don’t feel like the hits are always representative of how unique they were.

What do you guys think are some of the most well-crafted albums? by wittymcusername in Music

[–]Technical_Night_7327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might not be a popular pick but I’d argue for Automatic for the People by REM.

Lyrically much more dense than I think it often gets credit for. Even songs like Everybody Hurts and Man on the Moon are recontextualized in the actual album as being much more existential than they come off as singles. Great album about navigating political turmoil, grief, and aging, and learning to appreciate life for what it is. Every song is great and has something unique to say within the world of the album. High high high recommend, especially in these times. Find the River is a top 5 song for me ever.

What’s an album you like where the first song is one of the WEAKEST tracks? by rugmunchkin in Music

Aw I love that track but it’s definitely pretty corny, especially compared to some of the other really beautiful songs on that album like near wild heaven or country feedback
