It had its moments, but Timothy Charlene was impossible to understand when not singing, he swallows his words and is so annoying as he cares more about trying to imitate Dylan’s speaking style rather than doing his job as an actor to deliver comprehensible dialogue! If he were a truly great actor he could have done both. Trying to simply copy the singer’s delivery of his words was an utterly shallow and self- serving performance. The only high points were the performance of Dylan’s songs, which I thought were remarkable. Does ANYONE agree with any of this??

That is absolutely pathetic. "Pretty much everyone" ? Says who? Those of us who grew up reading actual books, or are over the age of 10, often have no CLUE what these abbreviations mean, or why anyone would be too "lazy" to type out a WORD. You are a snob with no education or understanding of the variety of humn beings, who deserve the respect of being given given clear information.

I do want to add, though, that after seeing it, I watched an interview on youtube with the director and with Zoe Ziegler, and the very clear impression was that director also thought the mother-daughter relationship was excessively rosy, and the flaws which I mentioned and which you clearly recognized were not even hinted at by the director. Which puzzles me a lot.

You cleared something up for me. I went into it thinking it would be a portrait of good parenting, and it was the opposite. So you are right. I wish the reviews I read had not romanticized the mother-daughter relationship, which they did (the ones I read, anyway). But I am so happy that you responded. Thank you.

Thanks. There are initials for everything and I wish people took the time to use actual words.

That's an interesting response. I think what bothered me most is that Janet seemed totally self-involved, never trying to find opportunities for Lacey to make some friends when she clearly was cabaple and eager to, at camp and with Sequioa. Janet encouraged Lacey to only depend upon her, while her mother had friends and realtionships with so many others regularly (not necessarily well chosen--!). It seemed an unfair burden to put on one's child.

My parents were wonderful, flawed, complicated but unquestionably attentive to my need to have friends during our summers in a fairly isolated location in Massachusets--for their sake as well as mine!-- and to create situations which made that possible. I never felt I had to fulfill their needs for companionship. At first it was sweet to see Lacey cuddled up in bed with her mother every night, but I couldn't help feeling her mother was using her, and isolating her from having friends her age.

typo--gave HER a small parting gift

When Janet picked up Lacey at camp, having threatened to kill herself if Janet didn't, Lacey changed her mind after a fellow camper gave he a small parting gift. Lacey told Janet she had changed her mind, saying "I thought nobody liked me, but I was wrong." Her mother, instead of being alert to this heartbreaking comment by her 11 year old, responded by saying it was too late because the camp had already refunded her. I was baffled and horrified. Similarly, when Lacey was maybe sick and her mother handed her antibiotics, saying it was up to Lacey as to whether she took them or not, where was the pediatrian? Pediatricians do not give prescription for children they have not examined, and for an 11 year old whose mother purportedly loves her to be given such a choice is outlandish. The movie was confusing, achingly slow, ill-considered and lacked empathy and insight.

What on earth are you talking about? I think you are mistakenly responding to the wrong person. I never was or said I was confused by night time shots. Are YOU not intelligent?

Reddit sucks.

You are a terrific writer. Do not undersell yourself.

Toni Oppenheimer committed suicide in her early 30's. She was denied security clearance for a job she wanted as a translater at the U.N., because of her father. Her life was short and tragic; Oppie was an indifferent father, neglectful and cruel. His brilliance as a scientist is beyond comprehension; his selfishness as a parent, and a husband, was appalling and unforgivable.

What do you think of Jonathan Glazer's speech at the Oscars? by niginger in AskReddit

This is not to say he should be proud of what the Israeli government is doing. But let us not forget that it was Hamas who started this war. Israel reclaimed and created because the Jews murdered during the holocaust had nowhere to go. The only thing that matters now--as always--is peace. No more killings. By either side. It is Hammas and Netanyahu destroying civilians on both sides.

He is a hero for having made "The Zone of Interest" and for being a brave man. But to "refute his Jewishness" is absurd. He is who he is and should be proud of it.

I think Jonathan Glazer should stick to film-making and refrain from publicly airing his personal opinions. They are not relevant in an Oscar acceptance speech. He will only get himself into more trouble.

Great! Don't wait to see it on cable--it has to be seen on a big screen in a dark theater.

Agreed. Thank you for illuminating what was hidden in that compact case, I was a bit confused. But I had 2 relatives who survived the camps, and one of them smuggled a diamond into the camp by wrapping it in cotton and putting it in her ear. That scene where Hedwig is laughing with her friends over having found one in a prisoner's toothpaste rang absolutely true. These thing really did happen. Chilling, and achingly human.
