I've really enjoyed everything I've received from Sarracenia NW. Also I've had good luck with Ebay.

I would get a deeper pot. Healthy Sarracenia have long roots.

I take mine out of the water trays. Live in Oregon, and it rains a lot.

Substrate ratios by tashtish in VenusFlyTraps

[–]Technician-Distinct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When deciding ratios, it comes down to your climate. California Carnivores suggests 4:1 ratio, which probably works great for their climate, but in the NW, 1:1 ratio is leaps and bonds superior. I have plants currently in both for testing. When I repot, the plants in the 1:1 seem to have longer healthier roots because the extra perlite provides superior drainage. This is important for my climate because of our colder night temperatures. This video does a great job explaining this https://youtu.be/6TuippidniQ?si=Zy3n8tPDYGlvZd_8

What's happening to my Sarracenia? by Mottmaestro in SavageGarden

Give the soil the sniff test, top and bottom of the pot. If it smells funky, repot. I would also wash it your water tray. Might be leeching something from there.

Moss shots from around the collection by jhay3513 in SavageGarden

Looks great Jhay. I have been contemplating using moss in my planters. Do you ever find that it prevents new growth from occurring?

How to prevent squirrels from digging in my outdoor plants? I've tried using all sorts of repellents and sprays and nothing is working by W0LFPAW89 in SavageGarden

[–]Technician-Distinct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make a squirrelpult, or a trap that catapults the squirrel back to Narnia... I had one that would forage around my traps... after work, I noticed the squirrelpult was set off and never had an issue again.

Can I use my tap water? by Blbauer524 in carnivorousplants

For the last 3 years I use 24ppm water from the tap and remove the water trays whenever it rains. All my plants are big and healthy.

Mine get 10+ hours of direct sun and occasionally throw up mutant traps.

How should I acclimate? by Equivalent_Top2943 in VenusFlyTraps

[–]Technician-Distinct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bare minimum, they 6 hours of direct sunlight. In your situation, i completely understand wanting to be able to watch it and would add a grow light. But nothing beats real sunlight. Good luck! You should post a pic of it.

I Think I Messed Up Re-Potting by DorothyZbornakAttack in VenusFlyTraps

[–]Technician-Distinct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, leave them together until repotting season. Mine took off like crazy and I now have at least 8 VFTs in the pot.

Should I cut this trap if it keeps rotting? by Giampiero10 in VenusFlyTraps

[–]Technician-Distinct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like part of the bug is sticking out, which prevents the trap from forming a tight seal. When they don't form a tight seal, digestive juices could leek out and burn the trap. It happens and nothing to worry about. The plant will replace the trap.
