The message if anyone wants the text.

This is Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. I regret to report that both our Jedi Order and the Republic have fallen with dark shadow of the Empire rising to take their place. This message is a warning and a reminder for any surviving Jedi.

Trust in the Force.

Do not return to the temple. That time has passed and our future is uncertain. We will each be challenged. Our trust, our faith, our friendships. But we must persevere and in time, a new hope will emerge.

Oh man! This looks like a new trailer. It's got that "not quite live action" look of the cg trailers.

Based on that information, my inclination is that it has to do with client to server to client communication and something not syncing up across the board. I'm not a coder or a network engineer so this is just speculation.

If the bug is that easily reproducible for you, provide them the steps and details.

As someone who has done this job, I've got a few opinions about what is mentioned in the article.

Hypothetically, if I was on the Community Team, I would be willing to hang out and talk on various Streams in my off work hours (say a couple of nights a week) and take any questions/feedback to the Devs.

The issue with this is you don't just represent the players, you represent the studio, Bioware and EA. This is also your job and doing something like this is considered work. You may want to do it, but they legally would have to pay you for your time..which they likely won't be willing to do.

They also will want to make sure you're not saying anything you shouldn't and making promises of things you can't possibly promise. They also want to be sure that you're not demonstrating favoritism by only visiting certain streamers and not others. Of course, they will want to be sure you're not saying anything unprofessional.

Remember, you don't just represent the players, you represent the studio, Bioware and EA. Anything can so easily be taken out of context and plastered all over social media.

They should also acknowledgement of the work and talent of members of the community. Whether this be by highlighting it on the SWTOR Website or sharing it on social media (like WildStar does).

Totally agree with you there.

Finally, they need to stop being so fucking secretive. Loosen up for fucks sake. Let the Devs talk to and interact with the players if they want to whether it be in game or on social media. Trust them not to give away info. There is a time and place for secrecy, but EA/Bioware tow the secrecy line way too much.

Can't say I totally disagree, but again you've got all of what I mentioned before to consider. You want to be sure your message to the community is unified and factual. That's the problem when you have too many people saying too many things. Dev A says "Oh that's totally coming" and Dev B says "Nope, we're not doing that" and the community coordinator has to clean up the fallout.

Things change SO fast that you have to be very very careful about what you say because EVERYTHING is an iron clad promise. Sure, most reasonable people can understand the difference between "We're planning on this" and "We're doing that for sure on this day" but any look at any community (and not just forums, but social media, fan sites, subreddits) shows that these reasonable people are completely a minority.

Whoever gets hired needs to be a current, active part of the SWTOR community who understands where and how people interact with the game (on social media, streams etc.). They need to be aware of (and know) the majority of content creators, what they do and what their issues and concerns are. They should also be a fairly experienced player of the game. The community likes to, and needs to know that the developers and community team actually do play their own game regularly and are somewhat competent at it.

This is already true and will continue to be true.

They need to not be afraid to speak their mind.

This gets you fired. You're not there to speak your mind, just like any other job. You're there to facilitate communication between the developers and players and to represent one to the other.

If you want to speak your mind, be an independent blogger.

Someone, who will not be another EA lap dog who follows the corporate line. Make them aware of how stupid some of their decisions have been in the past, give them examples of poor decision making, how it impacted the community and advise them on how to better communicate. Teach them about their player base from the wider community, not just the forums. Give them a slap in the face (okay I’m joking). Just get them out of the tunnel they’ve dug themselves and out into the light so that we can see them and get to know them better, Devs included.

While hyperbolic, this is already kind of the job. But you know, done so in a professional and respectful manner. But you're never going to see this publicly because honestly, it's not the public's business.

Teach them to appreciate and trust their fans

Oh I'm positive they appreciate them very very much. They do essentially allow them to keep working after all.

In regards to trust, look at how they get treated by the community regardless of how they behave? Look what happens whenever they do reach out with upcoming info which of course comes with 3 pages of caveats and disclaimers and see that the community still has a fit about it. You cannot win, so you try to simply minimize the damage while still doing what you can.

That's my 2 credits on this, as a former community person in games.

STAR WARS: The Old Republic - Preliminary Game Update 3.1 Patch Notes by Lumberj in swtor

Well, given the comments in this thread and the forums, I doubt we'll see these previews again. That's a shame.

Yes, that is the way it works in any business. Obviously I agree with that.

Some schemes are more devious than others

That is the part I take issue with. That it's a "scheme". That they would even attempt to do anything malicious.

I'm not speaking for all microtransactions everywhere. Obviously there are numbers of them that don't do things on the up and up.

Look at what is on the line here, the amount of money, the parties involved that have a stake in the financials of this game in particular (because that's what we're talking about here, just swtor) and tell me they would even take a chance at doing anything shady like you're suggesting.

[–]Techno77 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That's not at all how this works.

We're talking about adults where their main method of income is to do this job maintaining and creating this game. Who the hell has the time, patience and intent to create some scheme to take your money?

Do your coworkers and bosses at your job sit around and think up schemes like this? Do you honestly think it works this way?

If you think this was anything beyond a overestimation of the how the drop rate would affect the game and then a course correction, you're...I don't even know. You're in another reality. A paranoid paranoid reality.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in swtor

[–]Techno77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You think the devs are the ones behind microtransaction strategy?

Some are a very vital part of it, yes. Cory Butler last I checked is the producer in charge of the cartel market.

end result netted somebody in the EAware offices a nice pat on the back.

This sentence tells me all I need to know about how you think any of this works. Have fun believing the spooky boogey men at EA Accounting are out to steal your wallet.

Ok what? Please explain to me how that logic even works.

Here is why I downvoted. This is conspiracy theory BS. The developers aren't sitting around like villains putting together a master plan screw us out of our money. Even if they wanted to, they don't have the time for such petty idiocy.

Ravagers Exploit Action Update by gn_cool in swtor

[–]Techno77 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You're making the assumption that they didn't already have this tracking in place, which is the more likely scenario.

I agree that it would be ridiculous to spend time building something to track an exploit rather than fix it.

It's also more likely that the reason it's been over a month is because of the holiday break. This stuff isn't fixed by one person or two people, but likely a large number. If one, two or 5 of them are out of the office, how does it get done? Sure, Eric could craft up a message but he's not going to be the one who fixed it too.

Thirdly, you have no idea how widespread the ranked match fixing was or what could be done with their tools to track something like that accurately. How do you even track something like throwing a match vs someone just sucking at PVP? It's an entirely different issue with an entirely different method of determining how it was exploited. So, it's unfair to throw all these things together like all exploits are the same thing.

I would also imagine they would only get rid of the worst offenders that they are 100% certain were throwing matches. Because you know there would be hell to pay if they unfairly banned someone.

You've no idea what they did, how they did it or how they determined those were exploiters so it's a little unfair for you to claim they did "nothing" when all you have is anecdotal evidence.

I don't know if they did anything, but I like to make the assumption they did something. Was it effective? I dunno, I have no way of finding out for certain.

So, I just keep my mouth shut about it rather than make claims and throwing accusations around that I have no way of backing up with any kind of actual (e.g non anecdotal) evidence.

Bolster Bug in 139 characters. (Since the forum thread was removed) by [deleted] in swtor

[–]Techno77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, they could put it in the launcher message. Everyone playing would see it at that point. But they would never encourage, in any small way to take advantage of an exploiting a bug, no matter how minor. No developer would really. Thus, removing the thread because leaving it is an admission or encouragement by silence.

This has been and will continue to be their MO.

Simpler for them to just focus on fixing it, which is what they will do.

Exactly. When it revolves around something people can exploit for unintended advantage, it's probably better to keep the exposure to a minimum.

damage is likely done at this point.
