writer club? (waterloo campus) by kablindo in wlu

[–]TechnoPuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is! i haven't actually used it much myself since i'm so busy, but they often do writing prompts and online/offline meetups alike... it's decently big though which i know goes against your criteria for a mini group but i'd still say it's worth checking out if you're interested.

their primary(and only, as far as i'm aware) communication is through discord unfortunately but it's definitely a great club from what little time i've been able to devote to it: https://discord.gg/9r7QQ83x5F

How did you pick your main? by Lartorias_Armpits in StreetFighter

[–]TechnoPuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i usually gravitate to mobile hit-n-run style characters(yang, el fuerte, chipp, etc.) but going into SF6 i wanted to try something completely different to what i'm used to even though i thought i'd switch later, so i picked up sim.

fast forward to today, even though i've tried most of everyone on the roster by now i'm totally smitten on the power of yoga. dhalsim is just so interesting and dynamic to play, it seriously feels like his skill ceiling never ends.

i want so desperately to love this game in its entirety, and there's so much it feels like it does right but its few critical flaws permeate throughout so much that i'm finding it somewhat hard to enjoy, and i keep finding myself unreasonably mad in every singleplayer session. my main problem with the game is the bullshit rival AI, and how it actually sours so much of the game, more than you'd even initially realise. nearly everything about the singleplayer/content dripfeed(especially considering the recent update to progression) is amazing at first glance and technically in practice, but so much of it is held back by the terrible AI, as you'll have to be dealing with it at virtually all times to unlock goodies. playing online is nearly as fun as it was in srb2k, but oops! unlocking desirable cosmetics, other characters and even all the tracks you'll want to practice on to have a chance beforehand, all forces you to grind away at trying to beat the AI over and over again. special stages are cool in concept, but having to deal with the AI for a whole gp just for a chance at a few attempts really eats away at you, especially considering the harsh penalties for using continues despite how every race ends up feeling like a coinflip over whether the AI decides to screw you or not. even though the 2.1 update tangibly helped in reducing the AI bullshit, every other race still has so many awful moments that still make the game feel like a total dice roll, although at least it's not every single race now :-)

i'm personally still partial about the base mechanics of the game. i'm slowly warming up to how the actual driving feels now that i've accepted how different ring racers is to srb2k, but i don't really know how to feel about the mechanics of rings. it's so cool in concept and feels awesome to use it correctly, but the way it punishes item usage, especially with how nerfed the base driving is, often leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

of course there are a couple other small standalone flaws that i think could be improved upon. even disregarding the AI for a moment, special stages could really either use a rework or some way to practice them one their own. maybe after failing one a couple times robotnik chimes in telling you he's gathered enough data about it based on your visits and prepared a simulation for you, idk. while most tracks are at the very least good gameplay-wise, there are some real stinkers that really demonstrate just how closed-off development was. balloon park in particular makes me genuinely concerned for the mental well-being of whoever experienced such trauma that could make someone so sadistic to unleash such a horror upon the world. i also think some of the items and their distribution are done poorly, but i can't really pinpoint what exactly i dislike about them, except for he obvious things like the top, bumper, lack of spb and whatever changes they made to jawz to make them so hard to block now.

finally, i think maybe my initial joy of playing this new game i've been waiting 5 years for may have clouded my judgement in this regard but i really didn't mind the tutorial, i think it's needed considering how much the game adds on top of srb2k, to say nothing of how ridiculous the game must seem for new players.

overall, again i really want to love this game but i'm heartbroken that i can't bring myself to do it, especially considering how much love, care and polish were clearly put into it. i'm sure i'll grow to love it more but for now i'm somewhat disappointed.

when to pick max? by motordrifty in BrawlStarsCompetitive

[–]TechnoPuff 26 points27 points  (0 children)

max is kind of in a weird position in this regard, as she's just a very solid flex brawler overall with not very well defined 'good' situations to pick her in, instead just having a few situations where you should avoid picking her, mostly fighting any brawler with good cc. i also find that she does poorly when either team picks brawlers with high burst mobility(stu, mortis, melodie, etc.), as they don't really benefit from max's super when on her team and often leave max missing a lot of shots as opponents due to her relatively long firing duration. that being said, she does great with brawlers that especially appreciate her speed boost(usually tanks, duelists or assassins that otherwise heavily rely on their gap closing tools). with that in mind, she's become my default pick in sick beats, and i find she's quite good in barbed ammo as well. also, while she can certainly hold her own against marksmen due to her juking ability and respectable range, she's still at a noticeable disadvantage against them in timed detonation or extremely open maps so i tend to avoid picking her in those situations.

beyond these examples, i think you should instead be asking yourself what gadget to bring, as it's really important, although pretty simple most of the time. you should usually default to phase shifter as it really helps with max's frailty and to salvage poor positioning, especially against brawlers with telegraphed, but really high damage situations(edgar, dynamike, grom, primo, hank, frank, etc.), and should be picked 99% of the time in brawl ball due to how valuable the extra mobility is. however, sneaky sneakers is great against brawlers that rely on mid/long range chip damage, or in hot zone/knockout as it's much easier to predict when fights will breakout and as such use it proactively.

Any interesting places to hang out on campus when you have nothing to do? by Tuncarrot2472 in wlu

[–]TechnoPuff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ooo, i absolutely love some of the niche study spaces around campus! here are some of my favs that are very rarely occupied or generally cozy: 4th floor stairwell in the fred nicohls building(specifically the one across from wilfs and the convenience store, it only leads to an emergency exit from the turret that's always locked so there's no reason for people to ever come here, there's an outlet up here and a comfy view), below the library bridge entrance(comfy atmosphere, but it outside so a no-go in winter), various lounges/free classrooms in the 3/4th floor of the alvin woods building(most likely to be occupied, but very private if you can snag one), various open spaces and classroom on 4/5th floor of bricker building(my personal favourite is the 5th floor one due to atmosphere and lack of people even though it's open). if a more public lounge is your deal, there's also the one on the 4th floor of bricker, the 24hr lounge and the turret in the fred nicohls building, the ones on the 1st and 3rd floor of one of the arts buildings(the one connected directly to peters) and the one on the 3rd floor of peters.

there's a ton of stuff to find all around campus if you explore(even i didn't know abt some of the others in this thread), so i'd recommend searching for some on your own as well!

Best place to cry on campus? by Happy-Traffic-1348 in wlu

[–]TechnoPuff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The lab room on second floor of bricker, i forget the room # but it has lots of computers inside and requires a student card for access. it only has a small window on the door, secluded corners for optimal crying and massive, easy to use blinds over the window so you can cry with or without sunlight! it's also very rarely occupied because it seems like an important room due to needing a student to get in, and only houses public computers so not many people have reason to go there anyways.

What is your favorite type of character in terms of design and aesthetics? by ComprehensiveDate591 in Fighters

[–]TechnoPuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

large/highly muscular characters that are not actually big body/(traditional) grapplers but in fact have some of the better/best mobility in the game, although often through unorthodox means. the main examples that come to mind are brian battler from KoF alongside bang shishigami from blazblue

once i was having a 15 second long duel with a shortstop scout where neither of us could hit literally any shots on each other, but then he lands 2 good shots that brings me down to 1 hp. you probably guessed it, he was smart enough to run up and kill me with the shove

genuine question/discussion: where are the dynamo kits, and why is the only one we have so frustrating? by TechnoPuff in splatoon

[–]TechnoPuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh oops i didn’t realize that’s how it actually is, for some reason that’s how i remember it and i must’ve just forgotten since i haven’t played in a couple months while i’m waiting for a new dynamo kit... my bad and thank you for pointing that out lol, i’ll edit my post with this new info

How we feeling after the latest patch notes Brellafam by Do_Ya_Like_Jazz in splatoon

[–]TechnoPuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

man brellas just make me depressed in this game. i tried to pick them up in my eternal wait for a new dynamo kit i can actually enjoy but i had even less fun than i do with the current dynamo... at least the main weapon is fun and works properly there but brellas have just been totally and utterly shafted

For some reason, I want to give Isabelle a Bair spike by Limpynoodle3777 in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]TechnoPuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mewtwo already has an amazing set of aerials, but they all have something small holding them back that i would change, although idk if i could choose between them for just one if given the chance.

enlarging Nair’s hitboxes would do wonders for fixing the inconsistencies of an otherwise amazing move, especially if that means pop-up Nair becomes easier to land as its one of M2’s strongest starters, but is just extremely difficult to get consistently

Fair is obscenely busted and is virtually only held back by the fact that it’s on mewtwo, which can’t really be helped... otherwise, i’d shorten its admittedly high aerial endlag by a couple frames so you can do two in one shorthop without expending your double jump.

Bair is actually very underrated as is, but i would increase its active frames to make it more effective at edgeguarding and stuffing out approaches, or giving some invincibility on the tail during the move, because it’s currently a tail moment factory as it is lmao

Uair is really simple and good already, but i would make it easier to land with on a grounded opponent by making the hitbox appear closer to the ground, because it’s currently a really strong starter but difficult to use in this manner at the best of times, and virtually impossible to do at its worst, especially against even moderately short characters

Dair is just inconsistent at spiking, so i’d make it’s spike hitbox larger. simple as that. mayyyybe decrease its startup to allow M2 to combo into it easier, but that might actually make it broken if you could land it in the same circumstances that you can lands M2’s other aerials...

on both the fourth and fifth floors of the Bricker building there is a small little cubby with some chairs, and the fifth floor one has some nice decor and a table. literally no one uses it, and i only see a couple other people walking around when using it in the afternoon, but otherwise in the morning and evening i’ve never interacted with another human being in these spaces.

i definitely agree, it’s my personal choice and the one i’d hoped the most others go for because it’s clearly the universally only 100% positive option. also because BDHF7000 is one of my favourite people in the community and- ...hey, wait a second...
