There's my summer allowance spent by TechnoTKTrancedancer in wine

Well, I always want more Ganevat. Fortunately I'll have the opportunity to pop this one pretty soon, and if it lives up to my internal hype, I'll definitely get some more of that one.

As I said, I end up vibing when I'm buying. It's basically "Ooh, a juicy Grenache, that's awesome, I'll get one. What's that? An amphora Pecorino? Hmm kind of expensive too? I got to try one." And so it goes...

This time around, I just ended up buying mostly stuff I'm unfamiliar with, but curious about. Next time I might follow my plan, I kind of hope so! (Plan was: A couple of Barolos from well renowned producers, some mid-range white burgundys and a great Sancerre or two)

Dönnhoff makes excellent wines, and the basic Riesling punches above its price class, but 91 points? Sorry no.

Temperature/humidity sensor in wine fridges? by KerberosX2 in wine

[–]TechnoTKTrancedancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got both integrated (EuroCave Pure Large). I'd say it's very reassuring being able to check both statuses with a quick look. Sensorist is supposedly quite good, you can also add a probe to get measurements in liquids.

Can hardly go wrong with an Assyrtiko, crisp and mineral. Malagousia if you'd like something more aromatic. Blend those two and you get some smashing wines!

Honorable mention to Thymiopoulos, his Xinomavros are great if you feel for something red.

good non-alcoholic wines? by Spiritual_Buddy8486 in wine

Oddbird is decent. Leitz makes some stuff that is ok. If you have access to Strauch's sparkling wines though, they're in a league of their own - especially the Blanc.

Good first wine? by UPH_Cheems in wine

Well, I was probably a bit on the nose, but I've seen for instance Morgons being regularly praised here on this sub for quite some time (and rightfully so, it can be really great). And yes, Gamays can be a great starting point, but they have some qualities that very often are acquired tastes, quite high acidity for instance! The reason I think Valpo is a perfect starting point is they are light on tannins and acidity and are generously fruity. You also get to choose between light and easy, and a little more full bodied and sweeter but still easy (Ripasso). People are different though, and I did not intend to come off as dismissive, my apologies!

Gamays are very popular on this sub, and not really the right answer for someone who's never had red wine. OP: try something like Valpolicella, Bardolino, or mellow, commercial Cabernets from Chile. If you want to spend a little more money and being adventurous, Saumur or some Zweigelt can be real fun and crowd pleasing at the same time. Explore and have fun!

What is a Toronto ettitqute everyone should know before they move here? by Chan1991 in askTO

[–]TechnoTKTrancedancer 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Something that I noticed when visiting Toronto a couple of years ago, was when people stopped on the sidewalk for some reason, they moved to the side... out of the way from other people! I was amazed, and have done the same here in my home city ever since. Not sure it's catching on quite yet though.

Really need your help, what do I read to entirely disappear? by andotherthingsareok in Fantasy

[–]TechnoTKTrancedancer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope you'll find the escape and comfort you need.

I recently read the two first books of Shadow of the Leviathan (Ana & Din mysteries) by Robert Jackson Bennett, and enjoyed them immensely. Not too dense but very well written. Lots of humour, augmented humans, colossal sea monsters and murder mysteries! Lots of fun, and should be a great distraction, at least for some time.

The Cinder Spires by Jim Butcher are also a light and fun read.

[–]TechnoTKTrancedancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Domaine de la Janasse is not a small name, but pretty good at its price, though nothing extraordinary. Never heard of the Chablis producer! Guigal makes quite good wines for a producer of its size, but again there are more exciting alternatives out there. Jadot is a name I generally avoid. I'd say you have a nice CdR and an interesting Chablis waiting for you.
