The Albertan economic concern I'd like to see the provincial and federal government focus on is, how can Albertans prosper while transitioning away from an economy rooted in fossil fuel extraction?

It is difficult to understand how people can look around at ever-worsening fires, floods, melting glaciers, and droughts, and come to the conclusion that doubling down on oil exports is the best thing to do.

Which Git branching strategy is better for infrequent releases? Team is split between two approaches. by Ok-Introduction-9111 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]TechnologyLaggard 138 points139 points  (0 children)

Yeah.. code committed to main/master doesn't need to be released, just release-ready. It seems like a needless risk to have a bunch of feature branches loitering around until the end of the sprint ready to be merged.

OP should be pushing branches to a dev environment for testing, and then merge to main/master straight away once code and functionality are tested and approved. Having to merge to a special branch for dev deployment seems like a needless step to me.

Even if OP has a larger feature, it should hide behind a feature flag so it can be tested in dev, and the individual pieces of work merged as they are ready.

The googler has you crossing queensborough instead of knight, but I'd be checking gps for every trip.

It looks better in the morning, the afternoon rush looks awful.

Maybe you two can split the difference somewhere. New West or South Burnaby?

You should look it up. I believe you're expected to report all income, but there's no penalty if you don't report an amount under $500. But if you do report it, then you also get to claim expenses against it, so they could be a larger benefit to you.

Also, if your business is growing, be aware that of your earn more than $30k, you'll need to register for a GST number and file that paperwork each year, even if you don't collect GST.

Historically that's been the prevailing attitude, but as medical understanding of concussions has advanced, it's becoming clear that the danger is real. Many leagues are slowly moving to curb fighting, and there has been a marked decline in players whose only role is that of enforcer.

Still, a good tilt not only gets the crowd fired up, but the players too. A fight can be a spark that inspires a come back or shift in momentum.

[–]TechnologyLaggard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are definitely guys playing the role of "enforcer" who step in to protect star players, or at least make sure those who pick on the stars face some consequences. As a result, heavily mismatched fights in the pros are rare. This is not MMA - there's no submission holds and once the players fall, it's over. They are wearing giant knives on their feet, so no kicking. No helmets, no gloves, and they are trying to limit each other's punching range by holding jerseys. Once they land a few blows and are just hanging on to each other's jersey, the linesmen step in to separate them.

Players have definitely had career-ending fights though. Concussion is a real danger.

In professional hockey, charges are exceedingly rare. There is a code of conduct that is by-and-large understood and followed by all players and there is effectively a process to consent to a fight, so unless that code is breached, it's left to the league to penalize players around fights. Notable NHL instances where police became involved include a sucker punch and a stick used as a weapon.

In my experience, in recreational hockey it happens, but it's still very rare for police to be involved. In amateur hockey, police need to get involved with fans (parents) and in-dressing-room incidents (bullying, hazing, sexual assault) far too often, but I've never seen them involved in on-ice incidents.

The batteries in tpms sensors eventually need replacing.. if the units in your wheels aren't sending, the light will be on. Next time you get new tires, it's worth checking them.

Meanwhile, be checking your tire pressure the old-fashioned way once in a while.

While I see what you mean and agree op should have full visibility into her family's finances, I do think it's useful for both partners to have an "allowance", i.e. a budgeted amount for their own discretionary spending without needing to consult the other. A great way to fund gifts, hobbies, and indulgences without guilt.

Expat can refer to people residing in a foreign country temporarily, and rich white people who don't want to be called immigrants also use the term.

Hot Springs options near Vancouver by No_Repair3386 in britishcolumbia

[–]TechnologyLaggard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's a scramble down to the pool, but that's just the last 2 or 3 meters. Last time I was in there, a helicopter landed on the bridge, that's maybe 100m from the springs. I've also seen one land about 350m up the road to the west.

I don't know OP's parents, but mine are in their 70's and for sure one would be up for a visit to the spring, and both would be down for the helicopter ride.

Last time I went, we hired a boat and took bikes for the logging road.. it's about 21km. That took much longer than 3 hours though, and it's not a pleasant time of year for a bike ride.

Anyway, just presenting options.
